“Summer-induced stupidity. That was the diagnosis…”

The air conditioner is keeping the humidity at bay, but I feel a bit like a hermit. The closed windows and doors isolate me. No outside sounds, no people can be heard. Rod Serling could be standing in front of a camera on the front steps to introduce this episode of The Twilight Zone. I can hear him now,”Inside this house Kathleen Ryan sits in isolation, comfortable and cool and totally unaware that the world outside her walls has changed, but soon enough she’ll know she has entered The Twilight Zone.”

The morning is sunny with a slight breeze, but I can already feel the heat when I open the door to let Gracie in and out. According to the weather in the paper, the humidity will start to lessen tomorrow.

I don’t remember the weather being such a complicated topic when I was a kid. It was hot or cold or comfortable. There were no ten-day forecasts or drawings of cold fronts sweeping down from Canada. Forecasting was iffy at best, and the weatherman, always a man back then, was the target when his forecast went awry, and it went awry often. The best way to check the weather was to walk outside.

We seldom got sick when I was growing up. I think it had to do with the world being far less sanitized than it is now. We did get measles, mumps and chicken pox, but those were expected and there was nothing you could do about them. The worst was the itch from chicken pox. My mother went crazy making sure we didn’t scratch, “Do you want scars all over your face?” Then there was the possibility of blindness from measles. My mother kept the shades down and muted the light from the lamp by covering the shade. I couldn’t read or watch TV so lying in bed doing nothing made having measles seem interminable. The only thing I remember about the mumps is how huge my face and neck felt. I don’t know who brought home the mumps first but all four if us got sick at just about the same time. All I can think of is my poor mother!

It’s much nicer here this afternoon than it has been all day. It was so chilly with high humidity that I had to turn on the radiators for a while to make it tolerable here. Now the sun shines through the clouds and a weak wind blows.

We lived on the shaded part of the apartment building so my mother didn’t think it was necessary to keep away the little light we got and I guess she was right because I didn’t get blind 🙂

I’ve had chicken pox at least four times, I know they say that’simpossible but my doctor told me it wasn’t 🙂 I only got two or three poxes(?) each time and I can’t remember them being especially itchy.

I bought some dvd’s today and they’ll be delivered after July 20. I bought Enders game, I’ve heard it is rather good and it was on sale. I also bought the latest (7th) season of Big Bang Theory and the movie Seventh Son, Have You seen that one? They won’t release it until the 20th so that’s why I’ll get all three after that date.

I still haven’t seen the ones I bought last week, I moved down the tv to the sitting room but I still haven’t moved down the dvd player 🙂

    Have a great day!
    Christer.

      Christer,
It’s been a long time since I’ve needed the radiator. Here the AC has become common. I hate the humidity. It is really intolerable at times.

My mother just didn’t take any chances I guess. There was a window right at the end of my bed so she was being cautious.

I too thought you could only get it once. My neighbor didn’t get it until she was an adult and she scratched the pox and had a whole pinch of those round scars.

I liked Ender’s Game, and how could you not love The Big Bang Theory? I haven’t seen Seventh Son. Let me know what you think of it.

I bought a couple to show this summer, old ones, like Breaking Away and Robin Hood

      Have a good evening.

I just got up from a nap in my hotel room after my red eye flight down to São Paulo. I could never get comfortable enough to sleep in an economy seat but now American has crammed even more seats into the B777-300 making the space between the rows about the same as on a Southwest flight. Not bad for a couple of hours but after 10 hours I couldn’t move my legs because the reclined seat back in front of me was on my thighs. Luckily the entertainment system provided me with three movies that I missed in both the theaters and on cable. I think I napped during part of the Tim Burton movie ‘Big Eyes’. I enjoyed ‘Woman in Gold’ with Helen Mirren although it was hard to read the subtitles when they spoke German. And, a third movie about an old rock star who finds his only son who he never met who resulted from a drunken tryst with a groupie. He then tries to help his family and his ADHD seven year ago led grand daughter. I was so tired I can’t remember the name of the film or who played the leading role. But is was a fun flick.

It’s a beautiful sunny day winter day here with the temperature in the low 80s. I brought a sweater but not a coat. 🙂

      Bob,
I fly business or first class just for that leg room reason and because my back is so bad. The Ghana flight is nearly 12 hours long. The last time I slept 6 hours on the almost bed. It was the best flight I have taken in a long while.

I watch movies as well. I remember coming back from Rome and seeing 2 full movies and a few sitcoms. I also have a few I downloaded to my iPad I can always watch.

I like Helen Mirren and would have chosen that film.

The only place which was chilly was Peru in the Andes. Everywhere else had mild winter days.

      Have a great time!!

Luckily I can suffer econonmy since my company won’t even pony up for Extra Main cabin which has 36 inches of pitch instead of 31 inches. Upgrades using miles requires an outrageous amount of miles. I’m saving my miles to take my wife on a nice vacation at some time in the future. Instead I just leave a day early and recuperate and take an extra travel day off when I return.

        Bob,
I don’t have many flights during the year so I spoil myself when I do. Comfort is really important for me over long distances.

That’s a good thing your wife will get a nice trip sometime in the future.
