“America is a tune. It must be sung together.”

This morning I was rudely awakened at 8:30 by the sounds of mowers and saws. I cursed. Come to find out, they were working on my front yard removing the branch which had fallen in that tremendous rain storm, trimming the forsythia and wild roses and blowing my deck clear of leaves and twigs. They also cut off the branches which hung over my umbrella. After they finished, all was quiet except for the birds then a shrill voice broke the silence. It came from next door, the renters ( I almost want to make that word totally capitalized). They have about a 4 year-old girl with the sort of voice which causes chills up and down your back. She’s not quiet, and she yells often. Right now she is crying. The noise forced me inside.

The red spawn has learned a valuable lesson. I didn’t fill the beastie’s favorite feeder so it is forced to use one with wire mesh all around the seed area. When I blasted the feasting beastie with the hose, it couldn’t get out of the mesh fast enough. When I went out on the deck this morning with my papers and coffee, the spawn got out of the feeder and ran. I raised my hands in Rocky type triumph.

What a glorious day it is today. The sun is bright and warm and the sky is blue and beautiful. The slight breeze is cooling.

I have to dress my flamingo in its Uncle Sam outfit for the holiday. It is a star filled blue vest, an Uncle Sam hat and a white beard. Jaunty comes to mind. My Travelocity gnome is always dressed in red, white and blue. He’s a patriotic gnome. I think his name is Henry.

From as long ago as I can remember we celebrated the 4th of July. We always had a barbecue, and we always went to the parade. I love parades with all the music, the floats and the pageantry. Every parade, no matter the length, seems to start and end the same way with police in cars and on motorcycles at the beginning and fire trucks at the end. On July 4th floats and bands, drill teams and drum and bugle corps filled the parade with color and music. Uncle Sam walked the route on stilts. I love July 4th. I’m already making plans!

Perfect summer ice cream day, too hot for noisy garden workers.
You can already dress up your flamingo and gnome Henry for today’s women’s soccer World Cup semi-final USA : Germany. I’m sure at least Henry loves soccer since his garden gnome ancestors are from Germany.
And no, I won’t sing America tunes during the match 😉

      Birgit,
I guess it was early enough for it not to be too hot.

I’m all set for the game. It starts at 7. NPR Radio said both teams have yet to play at their potential though Germany is favored. Henry is a soccer fan but his allegiance is to his current country, not the country of his ancestors. I think I heard him saying go USA.

Ah, come on, just one tune!

USA tonight against the naughty Germans, and England tomorrow against the naughty Japanese. The siren is calling me on to the rocks and I am happily helpless to her tune.

The combinations and permutations for Sunday night’s final are equally fun…hello 1966 ????

    Hi Kat,
I think you are correct. Every parade starts and ends the same way. Police in the front and the fire engines at the rear ringing the bells and sounding the sirens. One year my father was picked to drive the rescue truck for the WFD so my brothers and I got to ride in the parade. It was cool being in the parade but it was kind of a bummer to be at the end an unable to see all the rest of the parade.
In my hometown parade there were plenty of marching bands and drum corps etc but everybody’s favorite group always had to come last right before the fire engines. They were styled after Revolutionary war drum corps and marched to a beat that was significantly slower than modern groups. They had to come last so they wouldn’t hold up the parade behind them. They were fast enough to keep ahead of the fire engines, though. 🙂

Today is beautiful up here as well. I’m not wearing a sweatshirt for the first time in a few days. Much better. 🙂

    Enjoy the day.

      Caryn,
When I was a member of St. Pat’s drill team, I marched in the Wakefield parade. It was much less fun than watching. Besides, it was usually hot.

I always liked the antique fire engines they usually brought out for the parade.

I remember the Revolutionary band. They were great looking.

No sweatshirt here either though I’m keeping it folded on the chair just in case.

Mostly cloudy here today but the clouds finally gave up when I came home and the sun has been shining since. It is a really nice day here now so I’ll go outside to enjoy it as much as possible. They say it will be even better the coming days but I’ve stopped believing them long ago 🙂

My gnome stands in a flower bed and is always ready to start digging since he also carries a shovel 🙂 I’v placed him close to my blue ceramics house. Both are more or less over grown hy weeds now 🙂

    Have a great day!
    Christer.

      Christer,
I check the weather on the news and in the paper. They are fairly accurate. It is still a beautiful day!!

My gnome stands and surveys the yard. He is on the deck, high above all he sees.

      Have a great evening!
