Good Vibrations: The Beach Boys
If you follow the comments regularly, you will find that Hedley often accuses me of pandering to im6, who then accuses me of pandering to Hedley. Well today I’m playing favorites of im6’s but not for pandering but for good wishes to Brian Wilson who is 73 today!!

Somewhere deep in the heart of Texas, say Austin, im6 is relaxing after a thoroughly good pandering.
Brian is coming our way on July 5th. For $120 you can sit in the orchestra at the Fox, and if you have $499 you can sit through a sound check and get to say hello to the great man. He will even hand you a signed music sheet. Al and Blondie are with him.
Tickets have sold quite well, he is a fun show. Mrs MDH and I sat on the lawn at Meadowbrook a few years ago and had a very nice evening as Brian cruised through his many classic songs ablely supported by the Brian Wilson singers.
I hope that you have no post-pander guilt.

My Dear Hedley,
Nope-not pandering. It is a tribute to Brian who has turned, gasp, 73. He is no longer a Beach Boy but an elder statesman of the beach genre.
If he were to come here, I would see him though I’d sit way, way back and not mind missing his autograph!
No guilt here!

Brian does share his birthday with my son who turns 29 today but I am not expecting you to pander to MDH Jr with a Kanye West track !

MDH,
I couldn’t name a Kanye West song if my life and loved ones were threatened

Phew! When I saw the titles I thought one of the Boys has died.
Lots of harmony vocal music for me today, the annual chorus festival took place in the neighboring town. Vocal groups all over the city center at places and in churches. We didn’t sing this year so I’ve had more time to listen and take pictures. It was fun. No sun but no rain either.
Speaking of im6…
Hi im6, I’ve bought my first James McMurtry CD today. It Had To Happen (1997) was the only one they’ve had in the 2nd hand store so I just hope it’s a good one. I will listen later.

Birgit,
im6 always tells me, after the fact, that I have missed birthdays so this time I figured I’d beat him to it especially as he is such a Beach Boy fan.
We never have such events though there are town bands and you bring dinner and sit on the lawn. We used to go every year but not anymore.

Phew, indeed! I get advance notice on my Yahoo home page when Kat makes new posts to KTCC and I thought the same thing, Birgit. Oh no! Did Brian die? I immediately went to Google news and was delighted to find that the Beach Man is not just alive, but celebrating another birthday. It really is a miracle he’s still alive.
I don’t think I make accusations of pandering quite as often as Hedley does. But the Texas heat and sun toughens the skin, so any digs against Brian and the boys is pretty much impenetrable to me. Besides, I know what’s good and what’s not. 🙂 and today’s choices are among the best (even if Mr. Chapman sang lead on Sailor).
I watched the documentary, “The Wrecking Crew,” this week and Brian really had/has the respect of those old pro musicians. Not the best film in the world, but I would still recommend it to any music lover. I knew the crew played unacknowledged on a lot of hits, but I never realized it was practically everything that was a hit by every American artist from 1962 to 1968 or so.
I don’t know that you can go wrong with a James McMurtry CD, Birgit. Would ‘It Had To Happen’ have been my first recommendation? Probably not, but it’s nothing to be embarrassed by.
I’ll sign off with a song from Carl and the Passions’ “So Tough,” which more than makes up for any lesser songs on that album. RIP Carl Wilson.

im6,
You are often a day late telling me of birthdays I should commemorate but I had read of this birthday and put a note in my calendar. I suppose it is a bit of pandering but you provide me with such great music I thought it perfectly okay to pander away!
I wanted only Brian lead songs but I do love Sailor. It has a wonderful sound. This too is a wonderful song.
As he wrote part of this (arguably), I figured it fit the occasion.

First LP I ever bought – Beach Boys “Surfer Girl”, 1963. That Brian made it to 73 is a miracle. Thinking about seeing the Wilson biopic “Love and Mercy”, but I hate the guy who plays young Brian (Paul Dano), and most reviews are uncomplimentary.

Actually reviews for the film have been quite favorable and Dano has been getting good reviews too. Cusack’s the one I have a problem with (in general) and the one the critic’s have a problem with his portrayal of BW.
Rotten Tomatoes shows 89% of critics rate it “fresh” and 93% of the audience “liked it.” http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/love_and_mercy/

Jay and im6,
Not having seen or read anything about the film I will remain quiet on the subject.

Dano creeps me out; not seeing Cusack as the older BW either. I’m going to see it regardless. The sound-track should be excellent!

Jay,
I’m thinking the same thing about the soundtrack.
June 21, 2015 at 2:17 pm
Right now, if you want a soundtrack, you’re going to have to make it yourself. The director has reported that there are “complications.” (My best guess is that Mike Love must have something to do with it, but that could possibly be because I find ML such an ass). Here’s a rundown of what you’ll need:

im6,
That is an undertaking. I’m glad for the list. I figure on a chilly, snowy winter’s night I’ll go hunting for what I don’t already have.
