So many memories popped up when I saw this photo πŸ™‚ Most of the apartment buildings around where I lived had these, I lived in a “very” modern apartment building because we had indoor toilets, either one in each apartment or one on every floor shared between two apartments πŸ™‚

The houses having these were the last ones to be renovated in my old home town Gothenburg so the lorries fetching the containers from those toiulets could be seen way in to the eighties πŸ™‚

      Christer,
Those lorries fetching the waste would be a single night soil man emptying buckets in Ghana.

I never saw these in the city where my grandparents lived. They all had indoor bathrooms, but the trash bins were in buildings like these, all with doors.

Me and my car pool buddy (independently) noted a long time ago that NPR (latin) reporters do this to the hilt. And it’s only the latin reporters. We find it really funny that the news story given in perfect unaccented English is followed by a rat-tat-tat hispanic pronunciation of their (full) name when signing off. Perhaps the anticipation is what makes it funny. And I’m not making fun of the language; Spanish is a lovely language. From a long-time English teacher perspective, what is the best protocol for this situation.

      Spaceman,
There is no protocol for this situation. You do the best you can in pronouncing the names. From the top you ask for help and correction.

This video is hysterically funny. I guess the path of less resistance is the best for kids with a raging teacher. Just raise your hand if you can figure out your own name being mutilated.

I had seen the vid before and it is super funny. I think it is from a movie where they are making fun of the theme where tough guy teacher comes in and straightens out the under performing and unruly (typically urban) students.

      Spaceman,
I loved the massacre of the names and his reaction. He was so indignant and angry. A A Ron was the last straw!
