Gnu,
I’m glad you posted this. I try not to repeat songs within a year, and I found out this song has been posted three times so I stayed away.
I love the rainy opening to this.

Gnu,
This too had been played. Maybe it shouldn’t make a difference as you’ve posted some of my favorite rain songs.
I heard this the first time in Accra, Ghana at the Peace Corps Hostel. The movie had come out while I was gone so I missed it and the song.

I did a post back in January on my blog with regard to this song and remarks made by Robert Redford at the London Film Festival in 2012. He noted that at the time of the filming of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid that it was stupid to put this song in the film. He noted, “All of a sudden in the middle of the film here’s this guy riding a bicycle, some guy is singing “Raindrops Fallin’ On My Head” and it’s not even raining!”
In the end I suppose it’s debatable as to what degree the popularity of either was helped by the other but arguably I think both had much to do with the success of the other… π

Alan,
I liked the bike ride ride and the song. Both gave the movie a bit of romance. Hadn’t ever heard of B.J. Thomas until this song.
I was surprised when I heard it had won best song in 1970 as I missed it being in Ghana. I saw Sound of Music, Is Paris Burning and The Thomas Crown Affair there to give you an idea of the movie choices. Music was high life, a Ghanaian sound.

Gnu,
I always find it sad listening to Karen Carpenter. She had such a great voice and to lose her was so awful.

If not reined, the rain will reign.
Cheers

You got some great selections posted here. I’d be hard pressed to come up with any song I didn’t like on the subject of ‘rain’ I suppose. My all-time favorite is Brook Benton’s “Rainy Night in Georgia” and secondly I would have to go with Eddie Rabbitt’s “Love A Rainy Night”.

Alan,
I love Rainy Night in Georgia, and I don’t think I’ve played it. I’ll have to hunt it down and add it to my rain folder. It’s a great song. I don’t know the Eddie Rabbit song so I have a different reason to hunt that one down.
I have a soft spot for the songs which start with lightning or rain.
