Spanish Harlem: Ben E. King

Ben E. King, the smooth, soulful baritone who led the Drifters on “There Goes My Baby,” “Save the Last Dance for Me” and other hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and as a solo artist recorded the classic singles “Spanish Harlem” and “Stand by Me,” died on Thursday in Hackensack, N.J. He was 76.

      Amidst the gloom of King’s passing and the failing health of Joni and B.B., there was a bright spot we failed to mention: the placing of the 76th candle on the birthday cake for Judith Collins yesterday, May 1.

      I suppose it would probably be most appropriate to acknowledge the date with one of her best-known recordings, the cover of “Who Knows Where The Time Goes?,” but I’m being a bit more upbeat and choose to share my favorite Judy tune:

        You know what a Judy fan I am-have just about every one of her albums. I wish you would share these milestones with me as I would have posted a Judy song or two though choosing would be difficult. I love your choice.
