The song didn’t sound like Sam Cooke to me, so I did some investigating. Sam co-wrote the song, but the lead vocals are by Johnny Taylor and Paul Foster. Would love to hear Sam’s take on the song, but apparently he never recorded it himself. All the versions I can find are of the same one you shared.

im6,
It didn’t sound like Sam to me either but I didn’t look it up. I appreciate that you did.
I didn’t list his name in the title as I wasn’t sure it was Sam. I also looked and never found him as the lead.

I wonder if the “Johnny Taylor” who sang lead for The Soul Stirrers is the same Johnny Taylor who sang “Who’s Making Love (To Your Old Lady)?” So much for gospel music! I suspect it’s one and the same person.

im6,
It is the same guy. I found this, “In 1966, Taylor moved to Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was dubbed “The Philosopher of Soul”. While there he recorded with the label’s house band, Booker T. & the MGs. His hits included “I Had a Dream”, “I’ve Got to Love Somebody’s Baby” (both written by the team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter) and most notably “Who’s Making Love”, which reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 1 on the R&B chart in 1968. “Who’s Making Love” sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc.”
Because his voice was similar to Sam’s, he was hired to take Sam’s place in the Soul Stirrers earlier in his career.

Now It’s my turn to thank you for being an investigative reporter!

im6,
It was my pleasure!

What the heck?

im6,
He doesn’t sound too much like Sam here, but he doesn’t need to-he has a fine sound of his own. I can’t say the same about his green suit!

Hey, I just said Cooke was great. I agree he’s not on this cut

Spaceman,
And I agreed with you about Sam! I think the Soul Stirrers just bought him to mind for the both of us.
