They’ll Always Be an England: Vera Lynn
St. George’s Day is celebrated every year on April 23rd recognizing the patron saint of England made famous for slaying a dragon and saving a distressed princess. In my family we have a plethora of Georges going back 4 generations. The newest additions are my grandniece Georgina and my grandnephew Jackson George.
To my friend Hedley, Happy St. George’s Day!

Being a (barely) post war child, I was more than aware of what Vera Lynn meant to my parents’ generation and her impact on morale during the dark days. She is 98 and much cherished.
It should be a day filled with Dragons, a trip down the pub for a pint of London Pride, fish and chips and mushy peas, a few cackles at the Morris Dancers and perhaps a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit preferably made by Cadburys. It would be even better if Tottenham were playing and even winning.
We are what we are – Me and Pet and Jimmy come from Epsom. I live in Detroit and have done so for 35 years. I love America, I treasure my history. I fuss over the Detroit Lions and I never ever miss a Spurs match. In November I will be at Wembley to see my Lions play Eric’s team. At the end of February I was at Wembley to see my team get beat by Chelsea. its just the way that it is
When I heard “bluebirds” it still brings a tear to my eye.
Thank you Kat, I will keep the dragons away from you

My Dear Hedley,
My father, George, graduated from high school at 16, but his mother refused to sign the enlistment papers, but the day he turned 17 he immediately joined the navy. His ship plied the North Atlantic and there it was sunk. He was one of the few saved. He spent a long time in Plymouth recuperating so England always was a special place to him. We went back to Plymouth once, and he was more emotional than I had ever seen him. He always had a piece of England in his heart.
I will have fish and chips for dinner this evening in honor of the day.
Thank you for keeping me safe from dragons.

Gracie feels much relieved and can now nap! She thanks you!!
My dad told us the story of his time at the hospital. He was all of 18. Both legs were in casts. He had been lucky his legs had been saved. He and his friend would somehow get on bikes and with casts spread out from the pedals would roll down the hill to the pub. Stopping was never easy but he managed. The problem was they could’t get back up the hill so an ambulance had to be called. The driver was never happy.
