God Bless the Child: Billie Holiday

Today is Lady Day’s 100th birthday. I found these songs on a supposedly public domain site. I hope so as Lady Day was one of the reasons Blogger kicked me to the curb.

One of the greatest singers ever! I’m sold since I first heard her Strange Fruit. May be not the best singer concerning vocal technique but music is so much more than just technique. Several Holiday tributes on the radio this week and I’m busy with listening and recording. I’m also looking forward to see the new Billie tribute program by Cassandra Wilson on TV on Sunday and wonder how she takes the songs since she’s more a technical singer like Ella. At the moment Lady Day on radio and soccer on TV, a really strange combination.
Thanks for Billie H on KTCC despite the risk!

      Birgit,
I totally agree. I was so taken by her voice when I first heard her I bought several albums, vinyl, and listened over and over.

Cassandra Wilson is a good choice, and I am interested in her interpretation. Billie is just such an original.

I haven’t heard any on the radio, but I’m thinking NPR must have something. I’ll check their site and podcasts.

      You are welcome!
