“Easter is meant to be a symbol of hope, renewal, and new life.”

Happy Easter and Happy Passover!

This morning my alarm jolted me awake at 6:15. I went down to my friends’ house to decorate the tree by their deck, an Easter custom. I hung a cardboard tiled banner with Peep in the middle and a chick on each side, several colored eggs and a small glass flower pot with a hyacinth. It was cold, only 34˚, and quiet until I heard the loud gobbles of wild turkeys. Four huge toms appeared on the front lawn across the street. Their tails were fanned. They strutted across the lawn, gobbled again, together as if they practiced, and went around back. I watched until they disappeared. Wild turkeys are common here, but these were the biggest I’ve seen.

After I finished decorating, Gracie and I went to the ATM and then to Dunkin’ Donuts. I didn’t see another car until the main road. It is quiet in neighborhoods on Easter morning. At Dunkin’ Donuts I was third in line.

The day is sunny and bright.

This afternoon we’ll get gussied up and go to our Easter dinner at the Ocean House. I think it is the only day I voluntarily wear a dress and fancy shoes. We always wait for a window table as the restaurant looks right onto the rocks and the ocean; hence its name. Out the windows you can see and hear the gulls circling over the water. If there is wind, there are whitecaps.

It doesn’t matter how many times I see the ocean or the gulls or the rocks because every time is mesmerizing. The waves slap the rocks and water flies into the air. Gulls walk on the wet sand and leave their footprints. They always seem to look proud as they walk.

During dinner we chat, laugh, take pictures, all sorts of pictures, and often look out the window. We always say how beautiful it is and how lovely the view. We also always say how lucky we are.

Living on the Great Plains makes me very jealous of eating at a restaurant overlooking the ocean. Do you eat seafood at the Ocean House? I think our fascination with the sea is in our DNA. Our ancestors crawled onto the land out of the primordial sea millions of years ago and we are still drawn to the water. Without the sea, which is the medium of all life on earth.

My personal choice for donuts is Crispy Cream. I don’t know if they are available north of the Mason Dixon line but they contain everything that’s bad for us but sinfully delicious. This holiday season is the beginning of Spring which is the renewal of life and the celebration of freedom. I wonder how that significance of the holidays celebrated in the Southern Hemisphere where autumn is just beginning.

      Bob,
They have meat and fish at the Ocean House. The food is delicious and the prices reflect that, but we figure it’s a special day so we need a special place.

There used to be Crispy Cream stores here, but they all closed. The company closed many of their stores across the country as they expanded too quickly and were losing money. Honeydew and Dunkin’ are the only two donuts shops around.

You’re right about this being the celebration of renewal, of the earth waking from winter. I got curious about Australian and Easter. I found a great site for you to read. I found it really interesting.

    Hi Kat,
    Happy Easter!
Sunny and cold this morning. No one was up when I took the dogs out earlier. The automated bells were doing their thing at the Catholic church but nothing else was stirring. Not even me. 🙂

Gulls are arrogant. Herring gulls are the most arrogant of all. Black Backed gulls are arrogant, too, but they offset it with an air of wisdom. It’s possible they’re thinking they are the descendants of dinosaurs and we’re just the offspring of rat-like things they used to eat. They cut us a break and we should be grateful and give them all our dumpsters. 😀

    Enjoy your Easter dinner.

Happy Easter to you too, Caryn

It was really chilly when I was doing the tree. I had slippers on but no socks so my feet got cold. I was glad to get back to the warm car. I’m not close enough to hear church bells. I always loved the sound of the real bells.

Gulls are scavengers and they fight each other for food. I’ve watched them fly at the same morsel and beat their wings at each other. Their sound is raucous, not sweet like the songs of other birds.

      Have a wonderful Easter!

Dunkin Donut just opened its first place in Scandinavia the other week, in Copenhagen. They had promised the first costumers a years supply of donuts so people had been sitting outside for 26 hours 🙂 I do like custard filled donuts but there’s a limit to how long I would stand in line 🙂 They say they’ll open two places in Sweden soon, one in my old home town but none in our capital 🙂

I do miss the ocean but we have the biggest colony of Laughing gulls here by the lake, they haven’t arrived yet though and I do miss them.

Sunny and warm here again and today the wind stayed fairly calm and came from a directon that made it possible to be in the garden without being disturbed by it. The kitchen door stayed open for hours and the dogs liked that a lot 🙂

I really should have driven to town today because I need a few things but it was just too nice weather to leave home, so I’ll need to go tomorrow no matter how great the weather is 🙂

    Happy Easter!
    Christer.

      Christer,
Dunkin’ Donuts are everywhere. My town has several. Some have drive-up windows while others don’t. I love stopping in the summer for iced coffee. Their Boston cream donuts are delicious, just like a Boston Cream pie. Today I bought a croissant and had it grilled.

I love being surrounded by the ocean. On summer mornings though I am not close I can often smell the salt water. On foggy days the ocean seems even closer.

Sunny and cool again today. I have yet to be able to open a window to let in fresh air. I have to close the back door sometimes as cold air comes in the dog door.

      Happy Easter to you too!!

Nice Easter dinner tradition, have fun.

      Birgit,
Dinner was delicious, and I ate almost every bit of it and even had dessert.

The restaurant was filled as it usually is. Most people were dressed to the nines. It was a fun Easter!

Kat, can you delete my previous post? It didn’t link directly like I thought it would. Here’s the photo to go with my caption, “I guess Peter Cottontail no longer hops down the Bunny Trail.”

      im6,
That is one scary bunny. I think I’d get off at the next station and wait for another train, one without a rabbit.
