I’ve always enjoyed Jesse Belvin and this tune got me curious about other songs by him. So off I went to YouTube where I noticed something curious… “b 1932 – d 1960”. He was only 27 when he died. You’re playing a lot of songs by singers who left us awfully early, Kat! (Buddy Holly the other day). His is actually a pretty interesting story… a model for Sam Cooke, being groomed to compete with Nat King Cole. Then…

“after finishing a performance in Little Rock on a bill with Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, and Marv Johnson, Belvin and his wife were killed in a head-on collision at Hope, Arkansas. The concert was the first concert played before an integrated audience in the history of Little Rock, and was stopped twice by interruptions from whites in the audience, shouting racial epithets and urging the white teenagers in attendance to leave at once. There had also been several death threats on Belvin prior to the concert, which led to speculation that his car had been tampered with prior to the accident. The actual cause of the accident was the driver who nodded off and lost control. The driver had been recently fired for falling asleep at the wheel by another musical act.”

    Here’s his biggest hit — and it’s a doozie!

      im6,
It takes me longer to choose the music than to write. I listen and know right away whether the song will fit with my mood or my musings.

This was an easy choice. Also enjoy his voice, and this song is a doozie.

Gnu posted all the Buddy Holly. He has become the Wednesday music posted to fill the gap.

His death is so sad. I wonder what punishment the driver received for killing Jesse and his wife.
