” Imagine what it would be like if TV actually were good. It would be the end of everything we know.”
I have not escaped winter’s wrath. My head aches, my throat is scratchy and my cough scares the dog. Luckily I have a doctor’s appointment this week. Unluckily I am entertaining. It is difficult to be gracious and welcoming when your only wish is to be in bed under the warm covers; however, I will rise to the occasion. Besides, that’s what home restaurant delivery is for.
The snow disappeared but the cold stayed. Getting the newspaper was a quick out and in. I didn’t even take time to admire the morning, but I did notice the birds singing.
March has always been one of those months when little happens. It isn’t spring yet except for the date and it isn’t really winter either as the season is losing its strength. Every warm day gives us hope then winter rushes back in and the nights are freezing.
This is a rant about things I notice on TV. Newscasters always either carry tablets or have them on the desk in front of them, but they never once look at them. During winter you seldom see the huffs of people’s breathing when they’re outside in the cold air. The cups of take-out coffee are always empty. Gibbs on NCIS has yet to drink a cup of coffee. He puts the cup to his mouth and pretends to drink, but the cup is never heavy and the coffee is never hot. On Rizzoli and Isles they mispronounce the names of Massachusetts’ cities even though the show supposedly takes place in Boston. They ride on highways which don’t exist in this state. On the Big Bang Theory nobody really eats the take-out. They toy with their food though once in a while Howard takes a bite of his lunchtime salad. I get the no eating as too many takes would mean too much food, but they could make it a bit more realistic. Really, how times does one dish of food need to be moved about with a fork?
I can watch the worst movies on the syfy channel. I loved Sharknato as ridiculous as it was, but it was intended to be that way. I just suspend disbelief, and it all works out for me, but for programs which are meant to be real life, I scoff at the little things. They drive me crazy.

I hope You’ll get free from the cold fast! it looks however as if the colds going around this winter are too long staying visitors.
I have always wondered if they start eating all that food when they have shot the scene in Big Bang Theory, it must be cold by that time 🙂
We do love our really bad movies 🙂 Like the last Godzilla, it was so bad it was hilarious and it was made in the spirit of the original Japanese ones 🙂 I’m not sure After Earth ever will be seen that way no matter how bad it is 🙂 🙂 🙂
not an especially warm day here with strong winds and the occasional snow fall, it doesn’t stay though and tomorrow will be warm and sunny. I’m not surprised about that, after all it is a working day 🙂
Have a great day!
Christer.

Hi Christer,
It will be cold for the next few days. I am so tired of winter.
The food is always on their plates, and not a single person actually eats it. Penny just stirs it around.
Nope, I agree about After Earth. It is just a bad movie. The others are made with tongue in cheek, and those are what you and I love to watch.
I am staying close to home today, take a nap and watch bad TV.
Have a great evening!

I hope you are feeling better. Have you gotten the new anti Pneumonia vaccination? There are so many commercials for drugs I can’t remember the names of the ones other than those that treat ED. The only reason I remember them is the warning about having an erection that lasts more than four hours. 🙂 If I ever had one that lasted that long I would have taken out a newspaper ad.
Newton Minnow, the director of the FCC in the 1960s called TV a vast wasteland. He had no idea what it has become today. It’s more vast and more waste. Local newscasters move around from one market to a bigger one and don’t take the time to learn the area or how to pronounce the names of local towns, streets or even officials. One local news yahoo here in North Texas referred to the town of Mesquite, pronounced just like the tree, as “mess kit” a few years ago. There used to be a book called, NBC Guide to Pronunciation that broadcasters used when they didn’t know how to correctly pronounce a name. Today, I don’t think the local talking heads could even decipher the symbology on how to pronounce a word. As an example the word ‘Houston’ is pronounced like the last name of the first President of Texas, Sam Houston. However, when referring to a street in NYC it’s pronounced ‘House’ ‘Ton’. Maybe the local news reporter came from NYC and didn’t know about Mesquite trees.
The rain has finally ended this morning and the sun is trying to break through the clouds. I was going to get my car washed today but they are forecasting more rain for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Next weekend might be dry.

Hi Bob,
I got the first pneumonia but not the second. I’ll ask about it when I get my physical. My headache is still here but far more bearable.
I hate all those drug commercials. The side effects seem almost scarier than the disease or illness. One said death was a possible side effect.
A couple of my favorite local newscasters are from here so they know the names of all the towns and street, but I seldom hear a local newscast with mispronounced ton names, but TV shows supposedly in Boston are awful when pronouncing local towns.
It is really bright and sunny here but too cold to go outside.

I had to write and add my two cents to the TV coffee point you were making, about how Gibbs pretends to drink. That drives me nuts, and you see it in TV and movies of all kinds – we know they don’t really have a big cup of hot coffee, but would it be too much trouble to act like it is? It’s supposed to be a full cup of hot coffee, but they carry it tipped at an angle, put it up to their mouth quickly as if taking a drink but then tip it up in what would create a flood of hot coffee in the mouth. Come on, how hard is it to act like you’re sipping it like a normal person?

BG,
I totally agree with everything you’ve written. I hate watching Gibbs drink. When I get Dunkin’ Donuts I can’t drink the coffee right away as it is hot, but there Gibbs throwing it down and lifting the cu as if it were half empty. They’re actors for God’s Sakes-Act!

Hi Kat,
Hope your cold goes away quickly. So far I have been lucky this winter. I shall knock on my head for continued luck. I figure I’ve been hardened by having to actually walk Piki Dog up and down the street in all sorts of horrid cold and snow just so he will do his business. Any cold germs I acquired got frozen to death. 🙂
PBS had some interview or something about Downton Abbey. I don’t watch it but I saw this. The one thing that stuck in my head was a comment about how the food got to be rather stinky after many takes under hot lights etc. If that’s the case, I don’t blame the actors for not wanting to touch it. 🙂
The weird thing I have noticed about TV is that one can often see the actor’s breath in scenes where it is not winter. I decided that this is because they are shooting early in the morning when it’s still cool.
March was the month when the dirt sidewalks on the way to school in the morning would be frozen ridges that made my feet bend in unnatural ways and hurt. In the afternoon the frozen dirt had all collapsed into a muddy morass which gathered in huge brown lumps on my shoes and caused my mother to say bad words. It was not my favorite month.
Feel better quickly and enjoy your company and the day. Hooray for restaurant delivery!

Hi Caryn,
I’m wondering if it is really a cold or if it is my allergies. I can breathe anyway now. The headaches must be sinus.
No, I don’t blame the actors either but it just looks silly when they keep moving the food around the plates as if we wouldn’t notice.
I haven’t noticed the morning breath, just the lack of winter breath. Sometimes there are even leaves on the trees when it is winter in a city where the leaves fall.
I had sidewalks all the way to school though sometimes I’d take the shortcut across the field. It was grass but it got so wet my shoes would sink. We had St. Patrick’s day off but the rest of the month we had school so it was a trudge month.
Thanks!
Have a wonderful evening!!
