“If you want a neat wife, choose her on a Saturday”
Today is a down day for me. Last night it snowed about 2 inches, and it is snowing right now. Earlier this morning, it was large, wet flakes but now the flakes are smaller and more apt to accumulate. The grass I could see is now buried. The tree branches have their layers of snow back. The winter seems endless, and I am well beyond my tolerance point.
Gracie and I are going to the dump later. I figure it will be fairly empty on a day like today. After the dump I will do nothing and continue my nothing pattern into tomorrow. This was a busy week for me. I don’t like busy weeks.
When I think back to winter Saturdays when I was a kid, they were always filled. The snow was fun. Our sleds got quite the workout all winter long. Every new snow fall meant the roads were covered, and the hill was ours. There was also the matinée. It was about a twenty-minute walk uptown to the movie theater, but we never thought about the time or distance. We walked most places all winter. Late Saturday afternoons were for inside and playing board games on the living room rug. We’d lie close to the board, each of us usually on one side of it. We played Monopoly, but it was never a favorite of mine. Finishing it usually took far too long, and it had little excitement except for hoping not to fall on a property with a hotel. We played card games like flap Jack, crazy eights and the most boring game of all, war. Sometimes, when I’d been outside too long and was still cold, I’d get comfy under my covers and read. I always had a book. Trips to the library were usually once a week, sometimes after school but mostly on Saturdays. I think Saturday was my favorite day of the week back then. When people ask me if I like being retired, I tell them it’s like every day is Saturday.

Saturday was also shopping day because in those days there were blue laws prohibiting most stores from opening on Sunday. The movie theaters had kid shows on Saturday mornings. My mother would give me a half a dollar which would buy the ticket and a box of pop corn. You really got your money’s worth in those days because you got to see a few cartoons, a couple of short subject films and a double feature. You couldn’t hear all the dialog because of the screaming if the movie was scary or laughter if it was funny. Kids threw pop corn at the screen and at each other. For my parents it was a godsend to get me out of the house for a few hours. If the weather was bad I would read books after the movie. The term for afternoon sex is called a matinée because it got the kids out of the house so the adults could have some fun. Now you know where your kid brother or sister came from. 🙂
Today is cloudy, rainy and mild. A good day for a movie. Too bad my wife is out of town this weekend. No matinée today. 😦

Bob,
My parents always shopped on Friday nights. Even when I was teenager they still went on Fridays. I think it was because Saturday was my Dad’s day to do stuff like taking his shirts to the cleaners, getting a haircut and doing things like the lawn.
Our kid shows were Saturday afternoons. We got a quarter which covered the same thing as your half dollar. Sometimes, though, I’d get candy instead, long lasting candy like a Sugar Daddy.
The owner of the theater always went up and down the aisles with his flashlight and would send out anyone he caught throwing something. You had to be quick on the toss.
It is now sleeting. I went to the dump, only three other cars which means the rest of the world is staying home as the dump is usually filled on Saturdays.
Sorry on your missing the matinée.

Don’t worry too much. At my age a matinee is more as rare than evening performance. 😉

The day started out quite nasty here, strong winds, low temperature and snowfall. We walked mostly in the forest just to stay away from the wind. But I went to the lake to photograph the cranes and I thought I would loose my hands. I now realise that even by the fields this village is protected from the winds 🙂
Just around 4000 cranes by the lake yet but I got a few photos before I gave up and drove home again. I was so cold I went to bed with all clothes on and covered my with the thick blanket 🙂
Saturdays and Sundays were much the same here since none of my friends or my family were churchg goers and none cared about children keeping calm and quiet on Sundays 🙂
I do miss those matinées, so cheap and so fun. Now I live too far from any cinema but they still have them, not with children movies though, now they show any moview as a matinée.
Have a great day!
Christer.

We have always had daytime movies for adults but Saturday daytime shows were specifically geared towards kids. Most of the double features were either B movies or reruns.

Bob,
I saw so many B science fiction movies on Saturdays that I became a fan of then B movie.
I remember the first time I went at night. I felt like an adult and I was of 13.

I can’tremember that we had that here when I grew up, only those be movies that was shown for us kids 🙂 and never a double feature, they stopped double features long before I went to the cinema.

Christer,
It was whole afternoon at the movies for about a dime.

Christer,
It is really ugly outside-the snow is now sleet and the roads are filled with wet snow. The icy ruts we finally got rid of will be back after tonight.
Sometimes you just can’t get warm. Even with my heat going, I’ve felt cold some days. I put on another layer and get under the comforter. I hope you finally got warm.
Sunday was the most boring of all days. We had to go to church and then hang around for Sunday dinner. It was home night for Monday. I was never a fan of Sundays.
The movie theater is close to me, and they too have afternoon movies. I go then as it is cheaper than the nighttime.
Have a great evening!

Chicken Tortilla Casserole
(03:53)
The South meets South of the Border in Trisha’s Chicken Tortilla Casserole.
• 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
• Salt
• Chicken Gravy, recipe follows
• 1 cup canned green chiles, chopped and drained
• 1 medium onion, finely chopped
• 1 clove garlic, minced
• 1 cup sour cream
• 1/2 teaspoon cumin
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/4 teaspoon pepper
• Cooking spray
• Twenty-four 6-inch corn tortillas
• 3 cups shredded Cheddar
• Chicken Gravy:
• 6 tablespoons butter
• 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
• 1 cup chicken stock
• 1 cup milk
• Salt and pepper
Directions
Add the chicken to a large stockpot, cover with water and add a large pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 30 minutes. Remove the chicken from the pot and set aside to cool. When cool enough to handle, shred the chicken and set aside. Reserve 3 1/3 cups of the broth (1 cup is for the chicken gravy, supplement with boxed stock if you don’t have enough.)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 13- by 9-inch baking dish with cooking spray.
In a large saucepan, combine 2 1/3 cups of the reserved broth, the Chicken Gravy, green chiles, onions, garlic, sour cream, cumin, salt and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat.
Spread 1 cup of the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Arrange a layer of 6 tortillas over the mixture, and then top with 1 cup shredded chicken and 1/2 cup of the Cheddar. Repeat this layer three more times, ending with cheese. Spread any remaining mixture over the cheese. Make sure all of the tortillas are covered or they will get very hard during baking. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes.
Chicken Gravy:
Melt the butter in a medium saucepan and whisk in the flour to make a roux. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until the mixture bubbles and the flour turns light brown in color. Gradually whisk in the stock and milk and continue to stir while cooking over medium heat. When the mixture thickens, after about 5 minutes, whisk in some salt and

Morpfy,
This sounds fantastic. I do love Mexican, and I always have tortillas on hand as I’ll sometimes make a quesadillas for dinner.
This is another keeper.

Hi Kat,
Saturday was movie day for us unless it was summer then movie day could be almost any day and Saturday was beach day.
It snowed here last night and about half of today. Eventually it stopped, the temperature went up and the snow mostly disappeared. I love self-cleaning snow. And I spied some more green things peeking out of the ground at the northwest corner of the house. Yay.
I did heavy duty laundry yesterday and today because of the PIki Dog chocolate drama. There was lots of chocolate-smelling fluids on some large items like my coat and some blankets and the front seat of the jeep. Most of it cleaned up fine.
I plan on doing nothing tomorrow except staying warm indoors.
Enjoy the day.

Hi Caryn,
The theater didn’t have matinees in the summer. We sometimes went to the beach too but it was never a set weekend day.
We too got snow last night and this morning then the sun came out for a while. Most of the snow melted. When I went to the dump, I was still snowing, but I was glad to get that chore finished.
I’ve had a headache a good part of the day, and I have company staying here. I will not be a wonderful hostess.
Enjoy the evening!
