“There it was again, the prickling sense of standing on a precipice.”

The snow was so heavy I could barely make it to the barn to feed the horses. I gave them extra hay and then, on my way back to the house, I tied a rope from the barn door to the house door so I can find my way to the horses again even if the snow totally covers my little world. We kept the fireplace going all night hoping the cabin would stay warm. The wind howled and blew the snow sideways. Supper was soup to keep the innards warm. We huddled together in the big bed to sleep and covered ourselves with the quilts from all the beds. We are warm and safe for the meantime, but I don’t know about tomorrow. It is still snowing.

I have not gone totally mad. It is, of course, an imaginary story, but one tethered to a bit of reality because I swear that’s what it seemed like last night with the snow falling so heavily that driving, even down the street, was almost impossible. The snow started in the afternoon so by 5:30, the start of game night at my friends’ house, the down the street I mentioned, it was snowing so heavily we missed the turn and had to go around the block. The white stuff, which shall not be named, fell the whole time I with my friends. When I was going home, three hours later, the path to the car, which had been clear earlier, was covered. “Enough! Enough!” I cried.

This morning is grey and cloudy; of course, it is. The day, however, is warmer than it has been and the sun is scheduled to make a guest appearance so maybe, just maybe we’ll see some melting. Tonight the temperature will fall back to the teens. Tomorrow night will send all of us into delirium: snow before 3am, then snow and sleet likely between 3am and 4am, then freezing rain likely after 4am. Low around 27. South wind 8 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow and sleet accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

May Day this year will include the dance of the shovels, the parade of plows and the wearing of colorful mittens, jackets and earmuffs. Everyone is invited.

      im6,
      Too much? Shall I edit?

Ha! No, but what’s funny is that I saw the first part of your post in a preview that shows in my email and I thought it was written by a friend of mine who does have a horse and is always talking about her ordeals at the barn (her foot was stepped on yesterday, breaking some toes). So I was fooled into believing it was real, if only for a minute. The only thing I can suggest is that you make plans to mark this all-time record snowfall with some sort of celebration. (Any excuse for a party). Stay warm. Stay safe. Stay inside!

        im6,
I figured I’d have a bit of fun. Last night’s snow just about put me over the edge, and that we’re getting more made me want to inject a bit of humor-needed humor into the snow situation.

I was talking to my sister about the same thing this morning-a celebration. I have sparklers and thought they’d be perfect to light about the big night though I suspect we won’t be in the cold too long.

I have to take Gracie to her vet appointment shortly, her annual, and tomorrow I have PT. That will be 4 days in a row I’ve been out. Talk about setting records!

    I wondered there for a second :-.) I’ve never heard You mentioning horses before 🙂 🙂 🙂

No snow here but rain and it will continue for a while. An American weather institute whose name I can’t remember at the moment has predicted the warmest spring in ages here in Sweden, I would love if that happened but the problem is that they have predicted that this winter would be the coldest one in ages (and the winter before that too) and so wrong they have been 🙂 My guess is that our spring will be deadly cold instead 🙂

I’m taking a break from internet until Saturday, I’mm feeling too grumpy to be writing anything that isn’t a complaint about everything 🙂

    Have a great day!
    Christer.,

      Christer,
It was just a craziness brought on by the snow.

It was warm today and the snow melted on the main roads and on places well shoveled. It is going to be much colder tonight so I’ll have to throw de-icer on the steps.

      I know that feeling!

      Enjoy your internet vacation!

Dancing in the cabin should keep you warm.

I’d be down in the cellar screaming…….covering myself with old quilts, coats, umbrellas, and newspapers……with all the snow ice grey skies and cold that you’ve had for so long. 15 years of MN winters was enough for me.

Take care Kat—it can not last forever. Keep that rope tied to the barn door. 😊 Sparklers aren’t enuff….Perhaps a big Spring bonfire!!?

      t,
Last night I really did get into an I hate snow rage followed by a string of expletives I’ve chosen not to divulge here. It was snowing so heavily at the time I felt justified.

A bonfire sounds perfect. I didn’t even think of that. It will be a wonderful celebration when we finally get to see real dirt and grass.
