“The flowers of late winter and early spring occupy places in our hearts well out of proportion to their size.”
Tonight’s projected temperature is -2˚. I have nothing to say. Complaints don’t help and neither do prayers. Loud sighs are just an audible angst caused by this winter.
If I could be anywhere, I would choose somewhere warm but not too warm, not sweaty warm. A breeze would be pleasant. I don’t need an ocean. I mostly need color. I want beautiful flowers in window boxes and along the sides of walkways. I want to be stopped in my tracks by the luscious gardens. I want people wearing clothes made from bright cloths with colorful designs. I want to eat outside at a table under a tree. I want just picked fresh fruit. Music would be nice. A single guitar player would be enough. I’d sit and linger over my meal. Finally, I’d be ready to move on. I’d applaud and tip the guitar player, pay my bill then take a leisurely walk. I’d smile a lot. That would be a best day.
I don’t want to live in Florida to escape winter. As ugly as this one has been, it is still just winter, worst than most, but it will end and spring will follow. I always greet the first sunrise of spring, my welcome to the hopeful season.
I love spring mornings when the birds sing to embrace the new day and the air has a freshness redolent with the sweet smell of flowers. I check my front garden every morning so I know when a flower has bloomed or a new shoot has appeared. I drink my coffee and read the papers on the back deck. I watch the birds at the feeders. Spring has a newness every year. I marvel at every flower.
I know this the dead of winter. but I also know spring is coming. I just have to be patient.

Madeira or the Azores are perfect this time of year. The Canary Islands are also nice but it tends to be rainy there this time of year. I’ve been to the Canary Islands but never the Azores or Maderia even if they are amongst the more popular places to go on vacation here in Sweden.
Spring is my season, warm and lots of flowers but very few biting insects 🙂 Auitumn works fine too as soon as the last hirse flies are gone but before the moose fly starts. I live my life much after what insects are around 🙂
Above 32F here both nights and days now but it will stay greay and cloudy, we had both snow and rain today where I work but all dogs were dry and clean when I came home so it must have missed the village 🙂 We have enough water as it is so we need a small draught instead.
Have a great day!
Christer.

Christer,
I think there are wonderful places none of which I can afford. I haven’t been to the Azores so that would be a good pick. I just need to win the lottery.
We don’t have spring until really late here because it takes the ocean so long to get warm, but when it comes, it is spectacular. The black flies don’t bother me here but they are in the woods.
Today is dry but damp. My house feels cold. I am staying home today!
Enjoy your evening.

Hi Kat,
I’ll take wherever that place is that you went to in your musings. Sounds wonderful. 🙂
Yesterday I did get to sit out on the top step in the sun. Of course I was completely hidden by mounds of snow but still, it was almost comfortably nice. 🙂 Today, not so much. Sunny, windy and really cold. The porch will be warm enough but I can’t sit out there right now. The snow blower is in the way.
Twenty-five days until spring. Hang in there and enjoy the day.

Hi Caryn,
You are welcome to come along!
Sun? We haven’t yet had any sun. It is bright behind some of the grey and I’m assuming it might be the sun, but I can’t see it.
Today is chilly and tonight will be Arctic. I put Gracie’s coat on when she goes outside. The poor dog has little fur and none on her belly.
I’m trying to hang in!!
Have a great night!

Butchart Gardens: I was there in 1976 🙂 I was 12 and very impressed. So huge and so many plants I hadn’t ever seen before. It’s long ago but I still remember this sunny day in summer. We were also in Nanaimo for a few days visiting my uncle’s parents-in-law but this memories are hazy by now.

Birgit,
It’s interesting the garden and the flowers stayed in your memories but the rest, the visit, is hazy. I figure the colors were impressed into your memory bank.

This morning I left for work early as the sleet began to fall in my neighborhood. Many people stayed home or businesses closed along with all of the public and private schools. The roads became worse as I headed west toward the airport with accumulations of a couple of inches of ice. I drove a steady 45 MPH avoiding stepping on the brake or accelerating especially on overpasses. All of this must seem ludicrous to our friends in NY or Boston where seven feet of snow has accumulated this month.
Unfortunately, I slipped and fell on my nose on the ice in our parking lot. I didn’t hurt my self only my pride, but no one was watching at seven thirty. We are not prepared for any kind of frozen precipitation here in the DFW area.
Tomorrow the temperature should go above freezing but there’s a chance of one to three inches of snow on Wednesday morning. I was hoping to get through this winter without any snow or ice. Nature has decided to include us in this terrible winter. My sister in Tampa was complaining about below freezing temperatures.

Bob,
You’re right-I got a chuckle out of people staying home because of a little sleet. You’re smart about overpasses being especially slippery; ramps are too. I had all night and most of a day of rain and there are still 3 or 4 feet on the ground.
I slip and fall often so you have my sympathy. My road was a sheet of ice the other morning so I took my time and was cautious. Today too parts of it are still icy.
I’m happy to share some of this winter with you.
