“A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water.”

The morning is so cold it took my breath away when I went to get the paper. It snowed again last night and the couple of inches obliterated the path and hid the mounds of snow from the shoveling in the last storm. It was slow walking to the driveway. The back steps are also now covered in snow so poor Gracie did not want to go down, but she finally did. Even now the snow falls wildly in the wind. The trees too are blowing and bending. Today is winter at its worst.

I have to go out in a bit, and I am not all happy about it. I need dog food, then I have PT and finally I need to do a bit of shopping for tomorrow and the big game. I’m making some appetizers, and I need all the ingredients. I figure not many people will be crazy enough to go out so the shopping will be quick.

I know my mother would not have let us out on a day like today. Even her multi-layering would not be enough. I can remember freezing hands and purple lips. Instead, we’d be spending the morning in front of the TV. The house would be relatively quiet. Saturday was a festival of shows for kids, and we’d sitting on the rug close to the TV, too close for my mother. She was an adherent of all the old wives’ tales about kids including sitting too close to the TV could cause blindness.

In Ghana, this is getting into the hottest time of the year, the height of the dry season. I never missed winter so much. Every day was endless sun and heat and blowing sand. My lips were dry, and my feet calloused. There was no refuge: no fans or air-conditioning. Even my house, because of its metal roof, held the heat. I used to shower and not dry off so the air would feel cooling, and I could sleep. Right now I’d be happy for that, for at least a couple of days.

Time to face the elements.

It’s only one of the wonderful four seasons of life in New England. In August we will be broiling under the summer furnace and you will be enjoying mild summer temperatures and cool ocean breezes. Does anyone retire to New England from the South? When I was a kid my maternal grandfather had family living in Duluth. They would come to NYC in January to get away from the really cold weather and see some Broadway shows. I was watching the program ‘Ice Pilots’ and can’t imagine that people live in places like Yellow Knife.

We had a cool spell the last couple of days with high temperatures in the low 60s. Tonight the forecast calls for some needed soaking rain.

Tomorrow’s the big game and the NFL has enlisted the Arizona National Guard to sequester the footballs before the Pats can deflate them. You know it’s going to be a good game when the pressure of the balls are the only story coming out of the pregame hoopla. 🙂

        minicapt,
I think that having to fly in somewhere especially in winter would be iffy. Given my histroy, I’d break a leg and have to wait days for th plane.

      Bob,
Right now I am not loving winter. It is just freezing outside and the wind is making it so much worse. The house is cozy and warm so here I am happy. Even Gracie is staying on the couch and doesn’t want to go out.

I have a friend from North Dakota who does come here for a time during the winter. They find it so much warmer here. People go south. There is no opposite migration.

Ice Pilots are the craziest drivers. I find it a bit frightening just watching them

The NFL has the balls now. Each team gave 54 up for safe keeping. I didn’t see anything about the National Guard, just Chicago Bears equipment manager Tony Medlin to whom the balls will be given 3 hours before the game.

They should let the Pats deflate the balls. They scored fewer points in the first half than in the second.

Of course the National Guard is not involved. I was kidding about that and folks moving North. Keep warm and good luck to the Pats tomorrow night.

      Bob,
Because I have a friend who comes here for winter warmth, I figured it was an excellent question about coming north. As for the National Guard, you got me!

It has been snowing all day but it is barely noticeable on the ground here. The predictions for colder weather from tomorrow is still the same so I guess they might get it right this time 🙂

It was never too cold to go outside in my family, just put on some more layers and You’re good to go 🙂 Normally we just went over to a friend and stayed there 🙂 We didn’t have childrens programs here on Saturday mornings when I grew up, as best they showed cross country skiing 🙂 I guess that’s why my generation isn’t that fond of that sport 🙂 🙂

I would love a bit of Gahanian winter weather right now even if we’ve had an unusually warm winter. I’m tired of this now and have started to sow seeds that I’ll put outside in a few days.

    Have a great day!
    Christer.

      Christer,
I wish it were hardly noticeable here, but the paths and roads were covered this morning. It could be 8 inches or more in the next storm.

Today would not be the day for kids to be outside. It was 21˚ and with the wind chill it was -3˚, not a day for anyone to be outside.

I too would like the chance to complain about the heat for just a little while.

Snow, blizzard, cold, another storm, stairs, … – survive!
It’s not too late to hibernate. We’ll try to wake you up with loud comments in April.

      Birgit,
If I could, I’d just pull up the comforter and sleep through the next storm.

I worry more about Gracie and the snow and her going up and down the stairs.

Cal me when the first daffodil blooms.

    Hi Kat,
I don’t remember my mother ever keeping us in because it was too cold. Probably we were moving around so much we didn’t get cold. I do remember curling up with my dog in a south-facing snow cave and taking a semi-nap. It was quite warm in there while the sun was shining and the dog was radiating. 🙂

It was very windy and cold here today. Part of our Main St was closed because the wind was picking up so much snow as it blew across the lake that there were blizzard conditions on that little stretch of roadway. There was one accident due to low visibility and there were big drifts of snow collecting on the street. I think that was a first.

Stay warm and enjoy the evening.

      Caryn,
I think today was that sort of day, when the wind chill is -2 or -3 below. The wind was the worst part of the day.

We had the best snow cave made in the huge pile left by a plow. The walls were spread with water so it was really strong. We played all day, even had lunch there.

Hated going from the car to the stores and back again. It was the wind making it so cold here, no accidents though.

You cuddle with the pups and have a great evening!
