Gnu,
I haven’t ever heard this one before.

Woody used the folk melody from the old ballad “Jesse James” and wrote these new lyrics.

Mark,
I think of that as musical plagiarism.

Kat, I think it is just part of the “process” of folk music – melodies are often given “new clothes” by anonymous or known singers. 🙂 I think we are the richer for it.

Mrk,
When you explain it that way, I agree. I figure too there are only so many melodies.

Mark,
Thanks for giving me a comparison.

Getting off topic (I guess) but here are two more versions of the ballad (the second one has a long intro before the boss comes in):

Mark,
These are great. I don’t know why, but I remembered the chorus when I heard the Van Morrison. “That dirty little coward..” popped right into my head. Some time I must have heard the song enough to put it into my memory banks.
Of the two, I liked the Van Morrison better, but I’d never turn up my nose at Bruce.

Mark,
I had to look up David Crowder as he is unknown to me. I do love that banjo and I like this better than the Hank Williams.

Or . . . how about Doc Watson & Earl Scruggs with NGDB?
November 28, 2014 at 3:47 pm
Mark,
I have liked Earl Scruggs since The Beverly Hillbillies. That was my first introduction to other than folk and mainstream music.
I am a sucker for banjo music. I have no idea where that came from.

I’m going to be here all day.

Cuidado,
I too listened to each song. It was great hearing the same songs sung so differently.
Music is a great way to spend a day!
