How would you know ?
On September 18 1971, some 43 years ago today, I made my way to the Oval cricket ground in South London for “Goodbye Summer” a concert of Bangladesh
Along with 35,000 folks I sat through Atomic Rooster, Eugene Wallace, America, Mott the Hoople, Quintessence, Lindisfarne, Grease Band and Cochise. An afternoon of rubbish really and then in the early evening on came the guy with the big nose wearing a leopard skin outfit. He threw the microphone around, strutted, preened and led the best little R&B band this side of Stratford and Muswell Hill. It was Rod Stewart and the Faces and yes he played Maggie May as well as Every Picture. I was in love and when the Faces played I tried to go.
It got dark, the delays were interminable, and The Who hit the stage really late. I think I left during Tommy I had to get the last train home and there was no choice. I saw The Who one hell of a lot.
Gee Kat – the anniversary of my first ever concert – who would have thunk that it was only 43 years ago

My Dear Hedley,
What a serendipitous choice! How nice it honored your first concert. I haven’t heard of most of those bands you sat through except Lindisfarne. Good thing you were patient or you have missed the evening’s treat of Rod Stewart and the Faces.
True enough-only 43 years ago!
I hope Tottenham was triumphant!
