“A stockbroker urged me to buy a stock that would triple its value every year. I told him, ”At my age, I don’t even buy green bananas.””

Today I am taking it easy, as if I don’t do that anyway. The cleaning of the cabinets on my to-do list is being shifted to tomorrow. Yesterday I moved the wrong way off the couch and twisted my back such that I couldn’t stand up. It took a while until I finally moaned and yelped my way vertical though it was tenuous as I had to hold on to anything I could so I could move forward. This morning I am much better, but I will not tempt the fates by doing any chores; however, I do need to get birdseed so an errand will be my sole accomplishment for the day.

At around four this morning I woke up because I was so cold. The window was open, and I only had the spread and the sheet to cover me. I did have two animals leaning against me, but they didn’t help a whole lot. I got up, easily I’m happy to say, grabbed the afghan and threw it on the bed. Gracie and Fern immediately chose their spots which didn’t include room for me, but I was determined. They got moved, I went back to bed under the afghan and was comfy and warm in no time. I fell back to sleep. The three of us slept until 9:45.

This morning I had a banana. Ever since I was young I have loved bananas. They went on my Rice Krispies, and I used to hunt for the slices with my spoon as they had a tendency to fall to the bottom of the bowl. They are a perfect fruit. In Ghana I could buy some right off the street and peel and eat and not worry about catching something. They are a boon to health and loaded with vitamin B. Bananas make a great bread. I am generally too impatient to wait until the bread cools so I slather a slice with butter while it is still warm. No fruit salad is complete without bananas. I don’t like pancakes, but if I did, I’d want banana pancakes. Banana cream pie is smooth and silky. A banana split has everything. It is served in a boat which gives it an epic proportion. It has three kinds of ice cream, a couple of toppings, whipped cream, nuts and cherries with stems. I was always partial to hot fudge sauce and usually caramel as my second choice. A finished banana split is a work of art. As crazy as the movie is, I like Woody Allen’s Bananas. I can sing the Chiquita Banana song, but I doubt my hips can gyrate in the same way. I do think the banana headpiece would look great on me. I have seen bananas growing. Big bunches of them hang from a palm type tree which isn’t a palm though some call it a banana palm. It gets confusing.

The banana plant is actually a herb, the biggest herb on earth but who cares 🙂 It is my favorite fruit of them all (even if Mango comes as a close second). I can’t however stand warm bananas in dinners or desserts. Banana pudding is just delicious and almost totally unknown over here.

Too bad about Your back! I’m glad it’s better today but do take it easy for a couple of days even if it is good to move the back when it’s bad. Long walks are good and I always take long walks when the rheumatisms hits there. Not easy and not nice while doing it but it is after a few days when the pain slowly goes away 🙂

    Have a great day!
    Christer.

      Christer,
I knew it wasn’t a palm, but I didn’t know what it was. Thanks! I like mangoes but the pineapple is my second favorite. Living in Ghana meant living in a paradise of fruit.

I can’t walk very far before my back starts hurting. I walk a bit, stop a bit then walk again. Last night was the worst it has been in a long while. I am definitely taking it easy and a couple of pain pills helped a lot.

      Have a great Saturday!

LOVE bananas! But you DON’T like pancakes? What is up with that?

Thank you for posting Harry Chapin’s tune…an underrated classic…

      Hi Coleen,
I don’t like the consistency of pancakes. It grosses me out. They look so promising on the outside but are a disappointment on the inside.

A sunny lovely day here-sorry for your clouds!

Sorry to hear about your back. I know how debilitating a sore back can be. I am not a fan of bananas. There is something in the flavor that I don’t like. Unfortunately, they are very good for you and contain high levels of potassium which is good for your heart and your muscles. They are even better than an apple. I do eat them occasionally when I feel guilty about eating all that chocolate or other junk food so I eat a banana to sooth over my food conscience. 🙂

My favorite fruits are, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, peaches, plums and nectarines. A nectarine is half a peach and half a plum which is a hellava fruit. This time of year I go into fruit withdrawal symptoms. A grapefruit or orange just can’t compete.

      Thanks, Bob
That’s a great way to salve your conscience, but I would say that chocolate too has nutritional value, dark chocolate, so no guilt involved.

I am not a peach fan. It has fur! I like most every fruit. Strawberries are one of my favorites.

Yes, dark chocolate has nutritional value of sorts and that’s why I don’t like it. I’m a lover of milk chocolate with all the fat to melt on my tongue and probably clog my arteries. A Hershey bar is heaven wrapped in foil. You must remember that everything I loved was either illegal, immoral or fattening. At this stage of my life the only thing I can do is the fattening part. 🙂

        Bob,
When I was young, I actually liked the semi-sweet Hersey bars. I now like dark chocolate and buy things like nonpareils in the dark; of course, I would never turn up my nose at any kind of chocolate!

    Hi Kat,
Bananas are great as a conveyance for peanut butter or Nutella. They are also good in smoothies, yogurt, and cereal as long as there are also grapes and nuts of some kind. A banana all by itself is not much of a flavor. Banana pudding, banana cream pie, banana split, do nothing for me. Banana bread, warm from the oven and slathered with butter, is heaven. 🙂

Backs are so touchy after they’ve been insulted. They go out at the weirdest little things. Good to read that yours is improved from yesterday. Keep resting it though.

It’s cold here. And damp. I want to turn on the heat for a little bit just to get the damp out but I don’t feel like shutting up the house in order to do it. It’s going to be colder tonight so I’ll probably have to anyway.

    Enjoy the day.

      Hi Caryn,
I like a banana as a snack. They are indeed wonderful with peanut butter and Nutella. I usually grab one to go and forget to add something. I should just keep peanut butter in the car for emergencies.

Last night was awful. I had to go to the bathroom which was why I got off the couch. Luckily I got there in time.

It is now cloudy and cooler than it was. I just shut the front door and realize I shouldn’t have brought my sweatshirt upstairs. My house, other than the window in my bedroom and the backdoor for the dog, is shut up. I did it last night.

This morning my house was 68˚which is usually what I keep it on in the winter when I’m wearing socks, slippers and a sweatshirt.

      Have a great evening!

Big Puffy and his chums are doing us a big favor in KC…love that Big Puffy.
The Prince will be watching Verlander tomorrow.

      My Dear Hedley,
I will ignore your description of a Boston icon! We are just glad they’re winning something.

I hope you and the Prince have the best day tomorrow capped with a win for the home team.

Kat, did you see that the Kinks are releasing a 5 disc anthology 1964-71 in November for around $65 ? It is calling me like a Big Puffy stolen base or Lennie live in concert.

When I was a child we had a windup grammophone and some of the old 33 records. One of them was the bananaboat song by Harry Belafonte. One day my cheeky aunt was visiting and she encouraged us to study the flight of the 33’s. They sailed beautifully and fragmented spectacularly upon landing.
Good thing my parents didn’t notice.

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      Bert,
I never sailed one, but by their shape and size I can imagine how far they’ll go, like a frisbee.

I still have several of my 33’s. I saw some for sale which had been made into small bowls from heating I suspect. That might join sailing them as a way to use them now.
