An odd one – Americans adopting an English name, Von Richthofen versus the Charles Schultz doggie.

A century ago the carnage had begun. On August 22 some 70,000 were to perish in a single day, Brave little Belgium had become the battleground, Liege the first victim

One hundred years ago today, Jack made his way to the drill hall at 76 Camden High Street. Its an Argos now but then it was taking in the eager volunteers who would form the 1,100 men of the 1/19 battalion know as the St Pancras Battalion of the London Regiment. Jack left for France on March 9 2015 and survived for nearly a year before being blown up on Vimy Ridge. The 1/19s moved on to the Somme and the 3rd battle of Ypres commonly known as Passchendaele. After a year in hospital Jack saw out his days with the Labor Corps finally being demobbed in February 1919 to spend the rest of his working life with the Royal Bank of Scotland. A bank manager in the heart of London

I read the war diaries, I know where he was but have no idea what he endured. I knew him as a loving and caring man that was my Grandpa. He has been gone for nearly 35 years but this morning my sister and I remembered him with great fondness.

I don’t really like this song.

      MDH,
I don’t really like this song either, but I couldn’t find too many songs based on comic strips so this had to do.

Only one of my grandfathers fought. He was a sailor. That’s all I know and wish I knew more. My uncle is the keeper of the memories, and he is turning 77 in a week. We need him to tell us more so we can keep the memories.

It seems Brave Little Belgium was the center for two wars. I know Bastogne was encircled by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge, and only the American 101st still wearing summer uniforms and running out of everything kept the Germans at bay.

One hundred years ago feels so far back in time, but the war always seems somehow close. One whole year in hospital tells me how severe Jack’s wounds must have been. I am glad you and your sister remembered him today. I too will remember my grandfather.
