“Flowers seem intended for the solace of ordinary humanity.”

This morning, around 1 am, I was awoken by an odd sound, a repeating sound. At first I thought it was an animal screaming from being caught by a coyote, but it went on too long for that. Next I figured it was a goose, a large, walking through the neighborhood goose. The sound was right below my window at one point then was quite distant at another then it came closer again. Gracie got up and went downstairs, but I wasn’t going to let her out. Finally the sound faded then disappeared, and I went back to sleep. I asked my neighbor if she heard anything. She hadn’t. My other neighbor said she had seen around 12 or 13 turkeys wandering the neighborhood yesterday. I think that’s exactly what it was: a turkey looking for the rest of the turkeys.

The leaves on the big oak by the deck are mottled with sun. They wave in the breeze, a warm breeze. The air is sweet-smelling. Today is glorious, a short-sleeve day, a day to spend outside.

My lawn is green, spring green. It is soft on bare feet. In the mornings when I go to get the papers the grass is cool, but in the afternoons the grass is hot and means a speedier trip to pick up the mail.

The front walk is lined on both sides with potted plants. I bought flowers, herbs and veggies yesterday. I didn’t buy enough. I never do. Skip is now fencing in the vegetable garden. The old fence was flimsy and needed replacing. The new one will keep Gracie outside. She’ll have to dig somewhere else. Soon enough the tomatoes and cucumbers and two more vegetables yet to be decided will be planted and watered. I get to watch them grow, and I get to be amazed.

A bit cool and rainy here now but it’s a nice gentke summer rain so it’s quite nice. More and more fklowers open up here now and today I saw the first Irises in my garden, deep blue.

My tomatoes still have no flowers but I hope they’ll turn up soon. I guess this rain and since it will stay cloudy all night, a warm night will make those seedlings I’ve planted grow. They still look tiny but I guess I wouldn’t grow much either if I had to stand outside all night when temperatures fall to almost 32 🙂

    Have a great day!
    Christer.

      Christer,
Rain is supposed to come tomorrow, and I’ll be happy. It hasn’t rained in a while and it will help all the plantings today.

One of my tomato plants came with flowers so it has a head start. Usually it isn’t until early August before garden tomatoes arrive.

Last night it stayed in the 50’s-was quite the warm night.

      Have a great evening!

    Hi Kat,
Today was one of those days that got away from me. I woke up about 2AM and couldn’t get back to sleep so gave up and surfed the internet for several hours.
Rocky and I went for a walk while it was still cool. I did some housework type stuff and then I stretched out on the couch just to rest my back. Right. I slept for several hours. Rocky did, too.

It was sunny and pleasant today. At least the part of today that I was awake to see. 🙂
I haven’t put in any tomatoes or veggies yet. I’m not sure I will. The bunnies and other critters get them first. I may stick to the Farmer’s Market and save myself the angst. 🙂

    Enjoy the day.

      Hi Caryn,
That happens to me then the cycle of staying up late continues as I can’t sleep the next night because of the long nap.

Last year was the worst garden year for me and everyone else I knew who had planted a garden. I hope this summer is a better one. My two gardens look great: weeded and planted. The deck was cleared of pollen and the clay pots are filled with flowers. It took Skip 6 hours. It took me about 2 minutes to write the check.

Hope you have a restful evening!

  4. Hi Kat,
If I don’t moderate comments, I end up missing some, and that’s what happened to yours on Red Foley. My apologies. 😉
