Spaceman,
I have heard this song many themes, but this is the first time I thought about it beyond Johnny has gone for a soldier. This was the first time that the woman was central to the song. The pictures were of every day women but women whose men had gone to war. Remarkable!

That must be pretty terrible

Spaceman,
Do you mean the waiting? The women at home praying their husbands will return? The number of dead in the Cicil War is almost beyond comprehension as every dead soldier was an American desire his side.

A bit long, but a beautiful melody nonetheless . . .

Marie,
You have perfectly described the melody, and her voice seems to transcend. I first heard her when she was with Fotheringay, but I don’t remember this song. It is haunting.
Thank you!
