    • Thanks, Kat! I’ve always loved this song and it still manages to move me. When I think of the number of poor souls out there who are “empty and aching” and “don’t know why” . . .

      Marie

        You are very welcome, Marie

I too have always thought of this as a sad song, a song filled with aching and longing. Once when I was shopping in small antique stores I found a Mrs. Wagner pie tin and had to buy it.

Bookends is one of my favorite of their albums.

The best ever mention of Saginaw…or does that belong to Lefty Frizzell and the Johnny Cash cover.

How the heck did they get Arthur’s barnet on the (greyhound) bus

Fab pick but not surprising since it’s Marie 🙂

        My Dear Hedley,
Nope I’ll give it to this song.

        Arthur’s barnet?

        I agree: fab pick.

Arthur’s Hair…one gigantic creation, hardly suitable for riding the bus

        Ah, MDH,

        Thanks for the explanation!

      • Hedley,
I haven’t been to Florida for a few years now (Sarasota & St. Petersburg ’04) and I’d love to go back.

“I am either being affected by the heat here in Florida . . .”

I don’t believe you’d only say something nice because you’re suffering from heatstroke – the way you talk about your grandson is a dead giveaway. (But my lips are sealed!)

By the way, what are your/your wife’s favourite British TV programs that are available for viewing over here?

        Marie

    • Aw, Hedley . . . thanks for that mention! It was so kind of you.

Marie, I am either being affected by the heat here in Florida or I am (finally) getting over the whole Canadian Olympic Gold Medal thing. Of course a couple of kids from Michigan did us proud and heck Meryl even won dancing with the stars. Maybe she is a future Bachelorette

Salutations to Ontario, and a fab picker of songs

      • Ooops – posted it in the wrong place!

Marie, I do worship the Prince..he is a bit special. He has resolved that he can go to London when he is nine. I will not disappoint him.

Mrs MDH and I are visiting friends in Naples for the long weekend and my son is down from Orlando which is really fun. The youngsters have just returned from deep sea fishing and are polluting the swimming pool.

Our TV viewing isn’t really anglocentric unless you include my obsession with the Premier League. BBC America disappoints and we tend to get series from amazon.co.uk as we have an all region DVD player. We are coming to the end of series 2 of “Death in Paradise” and have “the great train robbery” waiting. Still to see series 2 of “Last Tango in Halifax”

      • Hedley,
I haven’t seen any of the programs that you mentioned, and I’m also not impressed with BBC (Canada). I’ve always admired the quality of British scriptwriting (at least on the programs that I’ve been able to catch.) Unfortunately, I’ve noticed a slight falling off of that quality recently, which I attribute, in part, to the popularity of North American programs over there. Anyway, I’m sensing a boring Marie-style rant coming on, so I’ll stop right now.

My own guilty secret is that I’m addicted to Eastenders.

Nothing wrong with Eastenders, we grew up with a very heavy diet of Coronation Street, Crossroads and, on the radio, The Archers.

I was seriously addicted to the Sunday radio comedies, Round the Horne, The Navy Lark and The Clitheroe Kid

Rant away…free play on a very warm Sunday. BTW we are venturing across the border for the Shaw Theatre, but no Strafford this year.

        Best

Some songs just don’t get old. This is one of them. Ditto for the entire ‘Bookends’ album. Good God, don’t jump!

      im6,
Simon and Garfunkel came with me to Africa. I couldn’t have imagined not hearing them. This is such a remarkable album.
