I love to listen to Sandy Denny and this song. Usually I hear her BBC 1971-73 recordings. The Lady from the BBC sessions is one of my all-time favorites. At the moment some interesting 1970 BBC recordings with Sandy Denny and Fotheringay are available at:

      Thanks, Birgit
This will give me something to do tonight.

Like you, I love to listen to Sandy Denny’s earlier music. Her voice is something so lovely.

I really like the big band arrangement and how well the folkie voice works (think Jo Stafford). The other person this makes me think of (why I don’t know) is Janis Ian. Just sounds like a version she might have sung. Anyway, thanks for the Saturday Surprise for the Ears.

      im6,
I totally get the Jo Stafford reference and I listened for Janis Ian and also get that but don’t agree as much as I do with Jo.

I always think this is such a great Sandy Dennis as it is unexpected.

You are very welcome! My pleasure!!

Lovely, a favorite. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Jo Stafford– I’ll have to check that out. I could listen to this all afternoon. Thanks for posting such a beautiful song.

      Lori,
My mother had an album on which Jo Stafford sang her big hit Shrimp Boats are A Coming. I think we were the only kids out age who knew that one by heart.

      You are welcome!

Haunted Heart really makes the original comparison with Sandy Denny.
Now, here is the one Kat remembers (and I recall the original 78!). You have to wait for the verses before you hear the Denny comparison again (choruses being over-produced).

        Mark,
Thanks so much for this song. I haven’t forgotten the words and can sing right along with it. I think of my mother and her hifi, one of the first in the neighborhood and a gift from my dad.

Listening to my mother’s albums when she played them as she worked around the house was how I learned so many of the old songs.

Jo Stafford had such a great voice.

I just remembered Jo’s alter ego, Darlene Edwards. Her husband, Paul Weston, had the alter ego, Jonathan Edwards, and together they were quite the *musical* team. Gotta love two such talented people with such a sense of humor. I’m linking to the YouTube page filled with lots of examples of their…. ummm…. musical artistry. Remember Mrs. (Elva) Miller? Here’s her sister!

      im6,
OMG, Moonlight Bay gave me goose pimples it was so bad. Before the view disappeared, I read the back of the album. The Edwards were described as grate artists. The Ole at the end of this sing made me laugh.

      Who was the worst!

Thanks so much for this-I had no idea!
