It’s interesting to hear the original. Not so very different to the familiar Pentangle cover.

Birgit,
I did not know that Pentangle also sang this. I went looking and found it on youtube. They are similar in many ways. The Jaynetts had no other hits.
Pentangle’s version was in 1969. I might have missed it as I was in Ghana. I’m glad I got to listen. It’s a really good cover.

Grace Slick and The Great Society do my favorite version of the song. It just lends itself perfectly to the San Francisco/Summer of Love sound. And notice the image at 3:13. Looks rather familiar don’t you think? 🙂

im6,
I hadn’t ever hearted this version before this. Right away it is a totally different song for a different time than the original. The psychedeilic colors emphasize that though I could have done without Sally scantily clad among her yellow roses.
Wow, that is distinctly familiar!

I’ve always been familiar with the Pentangle version, as I have the record ( I think). I need a record sorter. I never heard Grace Slick’s version. Ah, the summer of love in SF– I arrived after that period– but the many things in the Haight haven’t change–yet.
I think my favorite is the Pentangle Version.

Lori,
I don’t have a favorite among the three but I’m leaning toward Grace Slick.
Waving!!
