“Every spring is the only spring — a perpetual astonishment.”
Some days just dawn. They aren’t pretty or warm or filled with blue skies. They’re just another day. Sometimes I have stuff to do, and Gracie and I head out into the world. Other days I have nothing to do so I read or catch up on the programs I DVR’d or I clean a little. Today I swept the kitchen floor and washed the counter while the coffee brewed. I felt accomplished.
Gracie doesn’t seem herself this morning and even turned down her favorite treat. Right now she is sleeping soundly so I hope she’ll be fine. This happens every now and then, but I still worry.
It isn’t much warmer, the grass is still dull and there are only a few flowers, but I see the world differently than I did simply because it’s spring. When I get the papers, I can smell the freshness of the air, and the morning chill feels temporary. The green fronds of the daffodils and the hyacinths now have buds. The garden is coming alive. The sun’s brightness gives hope of warmth and of me sitting on the deck with my face to the sun. I have stopped complaining about the weather.
Yesterday I watched the Red Sox lose to the Yankees. It may be the Grapefruit League and some players we’ll not see this season took the field, but it didn’t matter. It was baseball. The outfield was a lush green. People were sitting on blankets and chairs watching the game from outside the fence. They all wore short-sleeves and hats to keep their eyes shaded from the sun. They are a harbinger of what will come.
Enjoy the sun and the blue sky, the songs of birds and the color returning to the earth.

Astonishment ? That is an understatement.
“Before the Dawn” – out of nowhere, Kate Bush has announced 15 shows at the Apollo in London in August and September. I am in complete shock. Kate toured once for 6 weeks in 1979 and has not ventured out since. 35 years have gone by, I once was 24 and now I am not 24.
Of course, an email arrives from Kateclub giving me a presale code with tons of restrictions, but I have the presale code. Now what ?
50 words for Snow ? Today it is 50 words for Gobsmacked.

My Dear Hedley,
Knowing that you are a consummate fan, I would think you’d take the opportunity to see her. Do you really want to wait 35 more years when both you and she will need a wheelchair ramp?

Another warm day here and another day with strong winds. It never blows when we want it though, when it is horse fly and mosquito season š
Lots of cranes both inthe air and on the ground now and the Blackbirds are singing up in the tops of the spruces early mornings. We all still fear winter willreturn yet even if it only will be for a short while. Very odd that we have spring but not You.
Sune threw up last night but he seemed fine directly after he had done it. I don’t worry any longer unless it stays for two days, I would have been constantly worried since I have four dogs and one or the other is always sick in one way or the other š :-.)
I just saw the first Thor movie, a bit pompous perhaps but well done in most ways. It’s fun to see how our old gods are used as entertainment š but more and more say they do believe in those old Norse Gods (or Asagudar as we call them).
Have a great day!

Christer,
We will have our spring, just a little later than usual. Today wasn’t more than 43Ė but it still felt warm compared to the previous week. The sun is still out!
Gracie is over whatever stomach ailment she had. She was doing her I am hungry stuff so I gave it a try and she ate the whole can of food.
I like the first Thor movie as well. I remember on the Stargate series they had the Asgard, the ancient gods.
I wish i could see those cranes!
Have a wonderful evening.

Hi Kat,
I glanced over a blurblet somewhere that reported the groundskeepers of some baseball park were worrying about the permafrost on the field. They were using huge heaters under tarps in order to get it melted so that they could prepare the field for spring play. I think I may have chuckled.
The sun is trying to come out up here but the wind is blowing pretty hard. The windows are rattling. It would be warm except for the wind. The lawn is brown and muddy except for that one part in the back that is still a glacier. There are no flowers. And now I read that there may be a couple of bouts of snow next week. I am doubting that there is spring.
Enjoy the day.

Hi Caryn,
It was an article in the Cape Times, and I mentioned it on Coffee yesterday which is where you may have read it.
A wind here too, but it is a warm enough day. I went to the dump and didn’t freeze from the wind, a sure sign winter is on its way out.
So many birds sing now in the morning that I am hopeful we have sen the last of snow!
Have a great evening!!

š Thursday was very busy from beginning to end. I think I read yesterday’s Coffee at zero dark thirty this morning which is probably why I don’t remember. š

Caryn,
I’m glad you chuckled!
Most mornings when I wake up and before I get out of bed, I figure out the day of the week.

The clouds are gathering because a cold front is approaching with a chance of rain tomorrow and Sunday. We can use any kind of the wet stuff except snow. š This afternoon the temperature on my car’s thermometer was a balmy 79 degrees when I left work. We usually have a short spring here in North Texas. By the middle of May the high temperatures will be over ninety degrees. Hopefully we will have plenty of April and May showers. Anyone who is a golf enthusiast knows that the Byron Nelson and the Colonial golf tournaments, which are played annually in Dallas and Ft. Worth, sometimes get rained out. I have learned to enjoy the short spring and fall while thanking god for giving Mr. Carrier the brains to invent AC. Without AC the entire sunbelt would still be filled with sleepy small towns surrounded by dirt farmers trying to eek out a living or hoping to discover oil on their farms. š
It’s been a very strange and difficult winter. š¦ Those folks who doubt global warming don’t understand that it doesn’t mean hot weather everywhere, it means weird weather everywhere. That’s how I would describe this past winter. WEIRD!

Bob,
I could not live in that much heat. I did when I was younger in Ghana when this time of year was over 100Ė every day, but now I like my creature comforts.
79Ė in March is just too much. We may hit that in late July.
We don’t have a spring here because of the ocean taking so long to warm, but we get a really long and lovely fall instead.
I agree about this winter and people who don’t understand global warming. I had a neighbor who told me once it didn’t seem to be any warmer to him. I didn’t bother to explain.
