“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”

Winter is still holding on with all its might. Yesterday we got an inch of snow, an almost furious storm which made driving difficult and even treacherous. When I got on the highway, I saw a pickup truck on its side off the road and, from the dents, it looked as if it had rolled. People were checking the cab and the police hadn’t yet arrived so I think the accident had just happened. I’m guessing speed was responsible. I went 35, an unheard of speed for me, the whole way home.

Poor Gracie has been restless all morning and even cheese didn’t entice her. She was just outside for a long while so I got worried and checked and found her eating grass, a sure sign of an upset stomach. I called her in and fed her some spider plant fronds which usually help. I’ll know she feels better when her stomach stops rumbling and the cheese in her bowl disappears.

The first thing I do when I wake up is look out the window, the one I can see from my bed. I have a view of the sky and the tops of the pine trees. Today I saw sun and blue sky, but I wasn’t fooled. It looked cold, and it is. We are in the grip of another cold spell and will be for the next couple of weeks. It gets to the 20’s during the day then down to the teens at night, and that’s without figuring in the wind chill. I will most decidedly continue to be a gas hog.

My house is quiet in the mornings. The only sound comes from my typing. All three animals are napping in three different places, all comfy, cozy places. Gracie is always where I am. She is the best of company, a good listener and always agreeable. More people should be like Gracie.

Maggie the Westie is totally Mrs MDH’s dog. I am tolerated for snacking indiscretions, trips out side to do terrier stuff, the odd encounter with a deer, a few cheerios at breakfast and the odd car ride. Maggie has been part of the family for eleven years.

I heard some guff on NBC Nightly News that dogs do not feel guilt or shame – probably some random non scientific study by gold medal totting Canadians – NBC News is wrong, drop by my house if the terrier has had a moment.

      My Dear Hedley,
I too read the same study, but I swear Gracie looks sheepish when she is in the wrong. Maybe I am reading her eyes by my own sense of how I would be feeling but I don’t think so.

I am Gracie’s only human so we are attached. If, when she is out, I move upstairs she hunts for me. If I put on shoes, she runs around the house expecting a ride. She is most intoned to me.

If I close my laptop, Rocky gets excited because WE must be going somewhere.
When I get dressed in the morning, he gets excited because Omg she has jeans on WE must be going somewhere.
If I pick up his body harness, he gets really really excited because that means WE are going for a good walk somewhere SPECIAL.

        Caryn,
Gracie runs around the circle of downstairs: hall to living room to kitchen frown the hall and around again. I close the back door and go by the front door. She can’t sit still until she sees that leash coming. Then she knows we’re going together!

    Hi Kat,
If we were all like dogs, we’d be sitting around attentively listening to nothing because no one would be talking. Somebody has to be yapping or there is nothing to hear. 🙂
You must have had my today weather yesterday. It’s supposed to snow here but so far it has not. The sun is still up there although it is a little hazy. The air is very cold.
Rocky and I did go for a brief (very brief) walk down by the lake. He did all the walking while I just stumbled around in the frozen snow. It felt very cumbersome in my LL Bean 4 season down parka but at least I was warm.
It’s knit night tonight. I hope the snow cancels or comes very late. I like my social time, too.
    Enjoy the day.

      Hi Caryn,
Gracie is also a growler and a whiner. We’d be napping a whole lot more and would have to whine for treats.

I had to close the back door because I could feel the cold coming through the dog door.

Today is a stay in day, a clean the cat litter and change the bed day then I’ll just read and relax.

I’m glad I appreciated the weekend and its warmth.

We’ve had a rather nice day here. It was much warmer than they had predicted and the sun showed for a short while. I was even outside pruning (as far as I reached from the ground) the apple tree, the one shaped as a hand-hold fan. I need to go higher up but not until my right foot is back in shape again 🙂

All dogs were restless here today so I limped to the bog and back and that was quite enough for my foot. After that they had to do with the garden. Now they all sleep all over the cottage. Only Orvar is close the rest are most likely in my bed 🙂

    Have a great day!
    Christer.

      Christer,
We just had a snow shower but the sun is back. The shower was just like yesterday’s.

I’ll have to fill the feeders in the morning as the bird eat more when there is snow. The feeder is just about empty now.

I’m sorry your foot still hurts. Keep off it! The dogs will have to be patient.

      Enjoy your evening!

What are you talking about dogs for? Wouldn’t you rather talk about squirrels? I saw this video yesterday and thought of you. All you need to do is buy some model airplane kits and let them fly away from your bird feeders!

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      im6,
All I’d need to do is catch one, trap it in the cockpit. Get it private flying lessons and a flying cap!

      • im6's avatar im6 Says:

Don’t need to trap ’em. Apparently they’re versed in hijacking aircraft and don’t need assistance. Besides, haven’t you ever heard of flying squirrels? Bullwinkle would be disappointed!

      • im6's avatar im6 Says:

Probably should have said ROCKY would be disappointed.

      • katry's avatar katry Says:

        im6,
Of course I remember Rocky the Flying Squirrel with his aviator cap, but he didn’t ned a plane. He had his own mode. Maybe a bigger plane could be made for Bullwinkle so he can accompany Rocky.

I loved that show and Boris and Natasha!

This gives new meaning to a flying squirrel. I wonder if the squirrel had his annual airman’s medical examination and had his pilot certificate on his person. Oh, no he probably didn’t, then call the FAA so that they can violate him because he is obviously operating recklessly in the national airspace. 🙂

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      Bob,
I’m more afraid of having pine cones dropped on my head as he flies over. I think squirrels are probably vindictive sorts!

    Hi Kat,
Still sick and in bed most of the time, while my breathing is much better, my back hurts. I don’t know why when it hurts to breath, it hurts to write. Loved the flying squirrel. We are getting some rain, which is good I suppose. More people should be like cats ( or dogs) or less like people. I’m sick of being sick. As Gilda would say “If it’s not one thing, it’s another. Did I get that quote right.
Cookie is learning to be a kitty nurse, but I feel guilty ( remember that song?), because I can’t play with her as much.
    The Crew Waves,
    Lori

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      Hi Lori,
Maybe you did something to your ribs as that could cause pain when breathing.

I’m sorry you are still sick. It is no fun to be stuck in bed. Napping is fine but not being sick and needing to be there.

Cats and dogs are great at adapting. When I had that first back surgery, Maggie, my dog, stayed with me all the time and the cats were never far away. They are quite sympathetic to our plight!

      Feel better!!

Kat, Maddie, Fern and Miss Gracie
