ok. for this one I’ve got a story. many moons ago, my aunt her partner and I were all at my grandmothers house when word reached us that one of our relatives had died. since its a Minnesota custom to show up with food at such times, my grandmother stated that ‘if she knew she was dying she’d have baked a cake ‘. well
some smart ass started to sing….ever since its been a Minnesota custom to sing this when ….well. you know. I am the only surviving
smartass of the crew . here’s hoping karma has no cakes in my near future.
This was a saying that my mother said every time anyone showed up at her door. I was an adult before I ever heard the song. Now, it just reminds me of mom, so I appreciate your sharing it.

greg,
You started it-now that song with the changed words has become an ear worm running through my head.
Some of my family would laugh, depending upon the deceased, but the rest would be horrified. I am an oddity to many in my family.

Hi Rita,
I’m glad it reminded you of your mom. I’m always glad when something does that for me.
