    Cut it out Kat !!

Wow, this one has left me hugely conflicted. This is from Gabriel’s “Scratch my Back” initiative where he covered a number of songs in the hope that the artists would reciprocate. Released this week was the result, which includes Merritt doing “Not one of us”.
I like Peter a ton, have a long history with his music and his shows including the “Back to Front” tour to celebrate 25 years of “So”

“The Book of Love” appeared on the brilliant amazing “69 Love Songs” a triple CD set by the Magnetic Fields. Sung by Stephin Merritt, its the way the song should be heard. I love the Magnetic Fields, I will get in the car and drive long distances to see them and e mail with Claudia Gonson in the period leading up to the show.

I was driving home last night thinking about the greatest album that folks have never heard – I was listening to “Copper Blue” by Sugar. Maybe it’s “69 Love Songs” – a masterpiece.

Sorry about that, My Dear Hedley

I listened to Magnetic Fields then the Gabriel cover and chose the latter. I did like the MF song, but I figure I need baby steps first!

      Aren’t surprises nice?

I couldn’t even begin to choose the greatest album folks have heard. I still waffle on my top 10.

Kat, there must be some record or CD or scuffy Ghana cassette that you love that had very little success or attention.

Below you will find the wonderful Claudia Gonson singing the wonderful “Sweet Loving Man” from the wonderful 69 Love songs. A baby step that should bring you chills and thrills and the overwhelming desire to jump on the bus with The Magnetic Fields

        MDH,
I totally love Strange Powers, but I like The Shins so it’s n to unexpected. I just went to iTunes and downloaded it. Stop costing me money.

      Hedley,
+1 for Merritt’s Book Of Love. I’m not really familiar with the music of the Magnetic Fields, so I’m just listening to the mentioned album on YouTube.

Speaking of albums folks may not have heard:
Kat and Hedley, have you heard of the Chicago band Mutts? Kind of Tom Waits music. New discovery for me and so far I liked what I’ve heard, especially their recent album.

If you are curious start with “If It’s Hot It’ll Sell”.

Birgit – Terrific, I hope KTCC affectionados pile on with something special of their own

After the last Magnetic Fields tour, Claudia promised to play for me “The death of Ferdinand De Saussure” in a piano bar. I could only hope.

There are so many brilliant MF songs, hope you find your journey worthwhile

Alright and then,of course The Shins jumped on the train and decided to cover “Strange Powers” . Fab version but Merritt does it so much better

        MDH,
Scruffy? Ghanaian music had lots of attention in Africa but little here. High life music was the rage when I was there and had been for a while. It has changed and Afro-beat is one genre, and I know there are more, even a singer from, of all places, Bolga. But scruffy?

Okay, I liked “Sweet Loving Man” and I did like their original Book of Love, but it was just a Gabriel sort of day.

        Birgit,
I did like it but as I said I was in a Gabriel mood today after listening to both of the songs.

I listened to Mutts. I wasn’t enamored at the start but then they morphed into something else, and I really liked it. Maybe Tom Waits but someone else too I can’t think of at the moment.

        Thanks!

I tried it – I guess the only Mutts I like is the one that aggravated Dick Dastardly

        MDH,
        Dick Dastardly I didn’t remember.

Muttley and Dick Dastardly – Dig deep and think “Wacky Races” .

I meant you had a scuffy old cassette from your time in Ghana, not that Ghanaian music is scruffy.

Hope you downloaded the Magnetic Fields version, not the Shins. I love The shins but strangely they were deadly dull in comcert – I’m sure that comment just fired a pink bullet

        MDH,
I do have a cassette from my time in Ghana but no way to transpose it to MP3. It is filled with my students singing in their own languages and a couple in English as well.

        I downloaded both of them!
