“A snowball in the face is surely the perfect beginning to a lasting friendship.”

Yesterday was an odd day. I never did get dressed, but I wasn’t a sloth either. I did a variety of chores. Al the bird feeders were filled, the laundry was brought up, folded and put away, the camel’s head was glued back as was the zebra’s ear. Paw prints were cleaned off the kitchen floor, and the litter boxes were emptied and refilled. It was a banner day. The funny event was when I pulled out the barrel with the bird seed in it from underneath the grill cover on the deck. A chipmunk jumped out and ran by me as if his life depended on it. The chipmunk scared me as much as I had scared him.

Last night the house was ablaze with color. The tree lights were on in both rooms as was the wooden star, a plastic Santa, shell lights, the red pepper clump in the kitchen and the snowflake night-light in the bathroom. The house looked so lovely.

I remember the tree after Christmas with the toys still underneath it. My brother and I would sit by it and play one of our new games while my sisters played dolls. New sleds had to wait for snow but new bikes could be ridden despite the cold. The excitement of counting the days and waiting and hoping was gone, but we had all these new toys, and I always had new books so we were glad. I remember sitting in bed and being cozy and warm and reading a new Trixie Belden. The day passed almost unnoticed.

If we had snow, we’d be outside sledding on the hill behind our house or making snow forts. We older kids would sled down our street if it still had a layer of snow. That was the best ride of them all. It was a huge hill. From the top, you could barely see the bottom. I’d be wearing snow pants, my winter jacket, boots, a hat and mittens. When I walked, my snow pants made a swishing noise. My mittens would get clumps of ice attached to them, and snow found its way into my boots.

I was always freezing when I finally went into the house. I had to go through the cellar and hang up my wet clothes on the laundry lines. My skin was always beet red from the cold. I’d run upstairs to my room and put on warm pajamas and my slippers then I’d sit in front of the radiator to get warm. It was always the best day.

Wonderful cool and foggy weather here this morning followed by wonderful sunny warm weather. Now the storm howls and the rain pours down again. Werll it’s better than freezing cold and snow storm 🙂

      Christer,
I re-watched last night’s Big Bang and got a few laughs. They are just great together. I had left over roast which I think I’ll be eating for a another couple of meals.

I’m cold and just turned up the heat. I am not usually cold so this isn’t comfortable. Outside is chilly so I’m glad I don’t have anywhere to go.

      Have a wonderful evening!

Have you thought that the “Big Bang Theory” TV show is really a remake of “Friends” who are genius nerds 🙂

      • katry's avatar katry Says:

        Bob,
They are so very different from the Friends ensemble cast, more than just nerds, though I can understand why you’d make the comparison.

    Hi Kat,
I didn’t do much yesterday. I did put laundry in the the big laundry bag but it hasn’t made it to the laundry room yet. Oh, and I got tired of walking around knitting project bags in the living room so they have been put away. Well, most of them have been put away. The ones that are left are not in my way. 🙂

I think I’ll have a nap. It’s cold and cloudy out now. It snowed yesterday and the stuff is still hanging around.

    Enjoy the day.

      Hi Caryn,
I just got up from a nap. I was chilly and being under the comforter sounded cozy so Grace and I went upstairs. She woke me up-dinner time for her. I could still snooze a bit. She went out.

I have laundry in the basket upstairs ready to go downstairs. Maybe tomorrow. Right now I’m going to read.

      Have a wonderfully warm evening!

    Thank you letters

Friends, relatives, neighbors, everyone was Auntie or Uncle and they all send Christmas presents – initialled handkerchief sets, metal puzzles, sometimes a record token for a 45.
And now it had to be done, the dreaded thank you letters. Once the format was down, my sisters and I could roll but they had to be individual notes of gratitude. The only exception was for gifts received in person.
The stores were closed for days, Christmas TV was over and it was truly the Dustcart after The Lord Mayors Show.

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      My Dear Hedley,
Mostly it was to our grandparents we had to send the thank you notes. There were so many in my mother’s family (she had 7 brothers and sisters) that we chose out of a hat to whom we gave a gift. That cut down considerably on the notes.

Christmas TV continues on a couple of stations but they aren’t a draw anymore. Now I’m reading and tonight will watch a movie or two.

      IT’s a lazy, quiet time.

The annual battle with Mrs MDH has begun. I want to take down all the Christmas decorations and return to normal (quiet im6) and Mrs MDH not so much.

        My Dear Hedley,
Mine stay up until Little Christmas unless the tree gets too day then only it comes down. That will be the last night the outside lights shine.

No snow yet. It’s too warm.
Yesterday I wanted to clean the house, but listening to the podcast of Iggy’s Christmas radio show on BBC with blues and old rock&roll was the better alternative. His playlist is even KTCC-suitable 😉 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03mjhk0 House cleaning can wait. Christmas decorations won’t be taken down before Epiphany January 6th.

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      Birgit,
That is such a wonderfully varied play list.

I would think almost anything is a better alternative to cleaning. I do it when the mood strike me. I have look to live amiably with dust.

I’m with you and January 6th. My decorations will be up and the lights on through that day. On the 7th I go dark, so to speak.

The best part about not celebrating Christmas is that there is no after Christmas let down. After eight nights of Chanukah even the kids are ready for it to be over and move on. Between Christmas and New Years the only thing left is Kwanza. Have you ever met anyone who actually celebrates it? I was always suspicious of the similarity between the Kwanza seven candle Kinara and the nine candle Menorah of Chanukah. There’s a comonality of the terms when said quickly. It’s hard to get much tradition from a seven day holiday that was invented in 1966. Some people have furniture that are older.

Beautiful clear day here with temperature in the mid 50s.

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      Bob,
Years ago when I was still teaching, I met a family who celebrated Kwanzaa, but they are the only ones. I bought book all about it with recipes. It is pretty interesting.

Candles are associated with all of the holidays. Besides Chanukah, Advent has its four candles lit on each Sunday of Advent.

Kwanzaa is meant to celebrate African heritage and includes traditional African cloth, drumming and the pouring of libations, all African traditions.

I see after Christmas as a time to relax, eat Christmas cookies and read my new book. All the hubbub is done!

      Cold here!

Yesterday was mostly spent trying to figure out what yesterday was. With the holiday on Wed our schedule is all kittywaumpus and today feels like a Sunday with a thin paper.
