You know, it’s just a real shame that Johnny Mathis can’t sing. Nothing at all soothing about his voice and he has to put so much effort into trying to hit those notes. Pity. (You’ll be happy to know I couldn’t find YouTube video of Mr. Dylan doing the same song. Now THERE’S some singing that’ll get you into the holiday spirit π )

im6,
Dylan’s version is what you sing in a Japanese opera just before you fall on your sword-the height of misery!
I know-pity about Johnny!

Can’t sing? I have to disagree on grounds of nostalgia alone. This album was played every Christmas Eve when I was a kid. To this day, Christmas Eve just isn’t the same without Johnny warbling The Christmas Song, Silver Bells, Winter Wonderland, etc.
Am I the only one who’s going to defend Johnny’s honour?

Marie,
It was pure tongue in cheek for both of us die-hard Johnny fans. I still melt when I Hear Chances Are.
My love Johnny days go way, way back to my mother’s hi-fi.

“Smartass” apparently doesn’t translate well on the internet, Marie! The whole point was what a wonderful voice Johnny has. He’s like creamed butter and sugar!
December 17, 2013 at 2:26 pm
With you, smart ass translates well into any language.

My hero(ine)! Thanks for defending me, Kat.
December 17, 2013 at 2:30 pm
My pleasure, im6!

Kat,
Forgot to say thanks for this!

Marie,
You are most welcome!

im6 is a die-hard Johnny fan? Are you sure? I must have missed the subtlety . . . Still, let me be clear – our Johnny makes one appearance only per year on my playlists. When he comes up, I’m a kid again, curled up on the couch impatiently waiting for my dad to arrive home from work at midnight, when we’d all open our presents!

I have 24 Johnny Mathis albums on my external hard drive (and just as many LPs boxed away). So I guess I’m a fan and have been since 1958. Sorry you missed my stab at humor!
December 17, 2013 at 2:27 pm
Make that 1957 π That’s the year “Chances Are” was released.
December 17, 2013 at 2:27 pm
Marie,
It was my mother who played him all the time. My father was not a fan. She and I would be working in the kitchen making cookies and Johnny would be right there with us. It wouldn’t be Christmas without him!

Wow! What’s happening to my humour meter? (??) I can see any day now I’ll be walking down the street, shaking my fist at some young whippersnapper who happens to say good morning. Uh oh . . . now Marie’s going into worry mode!
I guess you two know each other so well that nothing gets by you. Still, I’m glad to know that you’re in Johnny’s camp – especially at Christmas!

Marie,
It’s the cold-it slows down everything.
I helped pitch the tents in Johnny’s camp. Many a quarter went to play his songs on the jukebox at the college canteen.

Kat & im6,
I’ve put a 4 Christmas treats (which you might already have) up on one of my sites. Box has rolled out some changes recently and now I find they’re just not as functional as they were. It possibly has something to do with Flash vs. HTML5. Can you let me know if you’re able to preview or have to dl to hear them?

Marie,
They play just fine. I have the first one from a great album called
Where Will You Be Christmas Day? On the old blog I played several songs from it including that great Butterbeans and Susie. I know I have The Drifters, but I’d have to check my external hard drive, not currently connected, to see if I have the Billie and the Moonglows. That last one sounds familiar.
Box works mostly the same but looks really different. I’ve found it still okay for posting and for offering music. I’ll stick with it until I find something better but just as easy to use.
Thanks, Marie!

Marie, I hope you don’t mind that I’ve also listened to your Christmas treats. Beautiful choices! Thanks.
It’s late at night and I still have to burn 20 DVDs which is so boring that I urgently need entertainment π
im6, I miss your daily song.
Kat, thanks as always for music and Ghana story.

Birgit,
It is my pleasure to post Christmas in music and story!
December 17, 2013 at 9:56 pm
Birgit,
I’m very happy that you listened to the tunes and enjoyed them. I didn’t mean to exclude any of the Coffee crowd – I’m very tired today and I realize it was awkwardly written.
I just posted a blues by Titus Turner at the same location.

Things worked just fine in both Firefox and Safari. Could both play them and download them (but I had all 4, so thanks anyway). Is that the only page you have live? “Home” went nowhere. Cheers!
December 17, 2013 at 10:05 pm
im6,
Thanks for letting me know. Maybe it’s just the Internet Explorer browser that encounters problems.
That’s the only ‘live’ (public) page for now (at least until after Christmas), but as I mentioned to Birgit, I just posted a Christmas blues at the same location.
I’d really like to launch my little project for all to view, but I expect it would be anxiety-provoking based on the amount of pop stuff I post – one take-down notice for an obscure early ’60s song that I didn’t think anyone would care about is more than enough for me. So I honestly just don’t know.

Birgit, I guess I got sidetracked with all the Mathis Madness. π I posted the song on my Facebook page, but forgot to post it here. As I said there… it’s the reworking of a classic — complete with flamenco guitar and accordion. Whistle along!
December 17, 2013 at 8:01 pm
Thanks, im6, I’m very glad I didn’t miss this song! I love it. Did I ever mention that I love accordion? π
(Your link is blocked in my country, but I found another working link. This crazy blocking-nonsense is so absurd.)
December 17, 2013 at 9:03 pm
Birgit,
I have a whole album of accordion music which I will sen to you when I get the chance.
December 17, 2013 at 9:56 pm
Kat, I know the accordion is often underrated, but have you listened to classical music on accordeon? Tchaikovsky for example?

Birgit,
I am never one to make fun of the accordion and I did not know I could hear classical music. I was delightfully surprised.

My favorite Christmas album…Johnny’s! Thanks for posting this, Kat.

You are welcome, Rita! Glad you dropped by. Have a most Merry Christmas!!
