I was struck by the genius of this song the first time I heard it and was not surprised that it was written by Jimmy Webb. Like the Italian opera trick of putting the most tragic parts of the opera in the major mode it does likewise with this heart breaking recount of love so innocent and new destroyed by forces beyond its strength.

At the beginning of my junior year in high school they had a talent show and I signed up to perform this song on the guitar with two adult friends who played the piano and trumpet respectively.
When we finished the choral director stopped me at the door and said “Why aren’t you in my choir?”
The next year we won State and toured for the spring break.

      Beto,
I thought the lyrics of this song made little sense until I read your comment and went to find some background about Jimmy Webb and his break-up and read that the main symbolism, the cake, referred to the end of his relationship. I had to look at the song with less of a jaundiced eye.

I am so jealous of anyone who has a good voice let alone one asked to join a choir which would go on to win State.
