“The power of finding beauty in the humblest things makes home happy and life lovely.”

Today has already been busy and it really just started. First it was Sunday breakfast, changed to Mondays until after Labor Day, then Skip, my factotum, came over and we went through the list of stuff needing to be done. He measured then off we went to the paint store then the lumber yard. He is replacing a board and two steps in the original part of the deck, sanding and painting a small table, filling in Gracie holes which are half-way to China, repainting parts of the deck chairs, painting both bathrooms and repairing an antique small cabinet which just needs gluing. I wait until I can keep him busy for most of a week before I get him over to work. Right now he is working on the Gracie holes. She’ll be thrilled. Tomorrow she can dig them all again!

My friend Clare has had spawns of Satan chewing the back webbing of her deck chairs, similar chairs to the ones I have where the spawn gnawed off the paint a couple of years back. Her spawns have eaten one chair so much the back is no longer attached to the frame. This morning I noticed one of my chairs has been gnawed a bit on both sides at the top, same spots as hers. I’m thinking her spawn has ranged about and found my deck. I sprayed the chairs with a red pepper spray the spawns don’t like and put chairs one on top of the other so the spawn has no access to the tops. I’ll check tomorrow to find out whether or not my efforts have thwarted those offsprings of Satan.

I have new neighbors. I think they are weekenders as they were here from Friday until this morning. The house they bought was in some obvious disrepair, needing paint and landscaping, but it seems the worst couldn’t be seen from the street as the backyard was filled with trash bags and hadn’t been touched by a mower or trimmer. My new neighbors did exactly what I would have done. They hired Sebastian, my neighbor and landscaper, to do all the back clean-up.

Today is an absolutely perfect day, sunny and cool. It was only 68˚ earlier this morning and has since warmed up but only to the low 70’s. The sun is brilliant and beautifully framed by the bluest of skies. Not a cloud mars the beauty. It’s a day to be on the deck with a cold drink and a good book. That’s it: my entire plan for the day. My work is done.

My first work day after vacation and it was quite nice, mostly because I left already at 11 am 🙂 I had forgotten that I had an appointment at the optician today. I thought I had it during my vacation to be honest but had forgotten all about it 🙂 In two weeks I’ll see so much better but I think I’ll cry a bit while paying for the new glasses. I mean they should know I suffer when having to pay $ 600 USD 🙂 🙂 🙂

No problems with squirrells here but the vole that destroyed my pond has found new territory in my flower beds. So far he’s in those with less bulbs and perennials but I know he soon will find those too.

Hot here again and the katydids are playing so lod nothing else can be heard. No problems when going to sleep though, I can’t hear them with my right ear so I’ll have the left ear towards my pillow 🙂

    Have a great day!
    Christer.

      Christer,
I felt the same way after my last appointment. i knew I needed stronger glasses, and I always get two pairs. I paid a good size bill when I was finished.

One year the spawns ate all my bulbs. The last few years they didn’t find them so I’ve had lovely dafs every spring. I have a chipmunk living under my front lawn but no voles.

The night birds aren’t many, and I aways love to fall asleep to their songs.

    Hi Kat,
There had to be a spawn story here somewhere given the photo. Like most troublesome things, they look like angels when they are asleep. 🙂

So far I have done nothing very much today. I walked the dog. Then I spent some time knitting a swatch only to determine that my choice of yarn was all wrong for the design.
It is a fact of life that no matter how many kinds and colors of yarn I have in my stash, the correct yarn for the project is never among those skeins.
I may have to go yarn shopping. Oh, dear. 🙂

Same lovely weather up here, too.
Enjoy the rest of your day.

      Hi Caryn,
I would strangle this one with my bare hands, and I know my friend Clare would help.

I had a busy morning then I just watered my deck plants. I figure maybe I’ll even get to the laundry today! I have to drive to Cambridge tomorrow so it will be a longish day for me, but that will be it until Friday.

      Enjoy this lovely afternoon!

    MORPFY SNACK

    Step 1

Carefully fill a small (sandwich size) ziplock bag with the following ingredients:
1 cup 2% or whole milk
    1 T vanilla flavoring
    2 T sugar
    2 T evaporated milk

    WHOA! SEAL BAG T-I-G-H-T-L-Y !

    Step 2
Into a large (gallon size) ziplock bag, add the following:
3 BIG handfuls of rock salt
    2-3 cups crushed ice
The small, sealed ziplock bag you just filled

    Step 3

    Shake the bag. What’s happening??
Shake the bag some more. What’s happening now???
When the ingredients in the small bag are thick and creamy,
    Your Done Now…

Use a spoon to eat your treat from the bag!
