Sugar Man: Rodriguez
Last night I was channel surfing hoping to find something worth my time. I ran into Searching for Sugar Man. Though it was late, I decided to watch a bit to decide if I wanted to DVR the film; instead, I was hooked and watched until the end at 1:15. The film is a documentary and winner of many awards including an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. It is the story of two Cape Town South African musicians and fans trying to find Rodriguez. They had heard he was dead and had died because of either an overdose, shooting himself on stage or lighting himself on fire also on stage. They wanted to find the truth as Rodriguez was amazingly popular in South Africa because of his album Cold Fact, originally released in 1970 and released in South Africa in 1991, and a second album, At His Best, which had gone platinum in South Africa. I’ll not give you the whole movie’s summary, but I do suggest you watch if you get the chance. I also suggest you learn more about Rodriguez, an unassuming, talented man. Both these songs are from Cold Fact.

I haven’t seen it yet, perhaps because it’s swedish and they tend to be rather pretentious and boring π I’ll see if I can find it.

Excellent film, even if you don’t like documentaries. I’m hooked on Rodriguez’ music now, too. Thanks for posting it.

You and I may have been channel surfing around the same time – saw about 15 mins and was hooked. Couldn’t stick around so picked up the DVD at the local library – along with Casablanca and Before Sunrise. Putting in some serious cinema time this weekend. π

lazarusdodge,
You are in for a great cinema weekend. Casablanca is my favorite all-time movie, and I love Before Sunrise. I figure it’s the romantic in me.
You will not be disappointed by Searching for Sugar Man: those first 15 minutes are a great portent of what is to come. You were the smart one. I ended up going to bed around 2.

This could be why I like the music on your blog so much, Kat: Casablanca is my favorite movie too. There are a few others creeping up on it, but it’s still up there.

Ted,
I had always seen it on TV then a local cinema, an old church with doilies over the leather seat tops, showed it. The place was filled with people mouthing the words, all lovers of this movie. I brought a friend who had never seen it. I just couldn’t imagine she hadn’t seen Casablanca. After the film, she said she couldn’t believe she had missed this fantastic movie. I thought her lucky that her first viewing was on a regular movie screen.
