Gnu,
It was my pleasure. I was trying to think of songs with picnic in the title-this one I remembered!

I was going to ask a question and then I remembered, “Oh! It’s the internet. I can look it up myself.” So I did.
Was curious about the use of the word “surry” in the song. What could it mean? Since I apparently hadn’t been near a dictionary in all these years, I’d never looked it up. But today I did some investigating and, guess what? It doesn’t mean anything! Laura’s explanation: “Oh, it’s just a nice word.”
Isn’t that great!

Just for fun… here’s Ms. Nyro’s demo for the song. It’s, quite naturally, fabulous:

What? A demo of Stoned Soul Picnic exists and they block the video in my country? I have 7 Nyro vinyls and 2 or more CDs and they won’t let me listen to this demo recording? That’s not fair! Well, at least I found the first 30 seconds. End of ranting.
Funny, I never thought about the word surry. Thanks, im6!

Birgit,
I hate to see you miss out so I had an MP3 made of the video. Here is the link to the song:

Birgit… the remaster of “Eli/13th” has 3 demos: “Stoned Soul”, “Lu” and “Emmie.” None of them differ substantially from the final versions — just not quite as “produced.” It’s a tribute to Nyro that she apparently usually started off with very good and ended up with great. Doesn’t always happen that way with a lot of recording artists.

im6, the not-so-produced is what I like π
Why do some producers / musicians think that adding a lot of instruments improves a song? Often the result is just a mush of sound.
By the way, while searching for an available version of the demo I found an early version of her “Lazy Susan”:

I like that it’s in a lower key than the record version, but maybe the tape is just running too slow.
