I went to see Tom Russell play at Cecil Sharp House – which is sort of the spiritual home of folk music in England – on Sunday and he was inspired by the venue to have a crack at this. Very good it was too. As he said himself, they don’t write them like this anymore.

He wrote the best songs. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face is an all time favorite of mine.

Thought you might like to know that this song was written about Salford in the North West of England. I used to work in Salford so this song always sends me back there.

I had no idea. My background knowledge for this song is scant; I knew only who wrote it.
The wonder of music is what memories flood back when we hear a particular song.
