Malvina Reynolds wrote this song, and I’ve mentioned before I know her daughter Nancy, who has a blog about her mother. Her mother resided in Berkeley. I also like the McGarrigles version. Here is Malvina singing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_2lGkEU4Xs&feature=related
Here is Nancy’s explanation of the song:
“My mother and father were driving South from San Francisco through Daly City when my mom got the idea for the song. She asked my dad to take the wheel, and she wrote it on the way to the gathering in La Honda where she was going to sing for the Friends Committee on Legislation. When Time Magazine (I think, maybe Newsweek) wanted a photo of her pointing to the very place, she couldn’t find those houses because so many more had been built around them that the hillsides were totally covered.”[2]
I guess that’s more then you really wanted to know!

I just looked up Graeme Allwright’s music and he is incredible. I posted two songs to FB. Maybe I should go to sleep?

Lori,
I knew she had written it, and it was also the first version I ever heard. The story, though is new. Thanks for sharing, and it isn’t more than I wanted to know!

Lori,
I’ve posted him here before, but it was a long while ago. When I finish here, I’ll check FB to see what you found.

If you want Graeme Allwright songs, just ask me. I have 3 or 4 albums of the man. Most of the time, he writes french covers of songs of Cohen (many!) Tom Paxton, Seeger, all these folk singers of the 1960’s. Drop a note anywhere on this blog with your e-mail. I will delete it after I write it on a paper :

Thanks for the offer, Mario and I’ll take you up on it. I’d love Cohen in particular and the others as well. I have Suzanne and have played it on Coffee before.
I just visited your site, and I love it. The sheet covers are amazingly beautiful. The German one with its vibrant colors is among my favorites. I do love the Mr. Mailman cover for, as you noted, its photographs.
I’ll leave my e-mail and thank you again for the offer.
