“Weekends don’t count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless.”
Traffic coming on cape last night was bumper to bumper for about three miles. I, on my way off cape, hit no traffic at all even through the city at what was usually the tail end of rush hour. I sailed right through. Coming home around ten last night, I ran into a little traffic but not enough to make me curse. Today is so lovely it would have been worth the wait to get over the bridge.
My garden is getting edged, weeded and mulched, and the lawn is getting cut then fertilized. My landscaper and two other guys came early this morning and are still working to spread the last of the mulch. I don’t remember my father ever mulching our garden. I suppose because it was so small, and he was no gardener. He was a buy some flowers and plant them sort of guy. If they grew, all was well. If they didn’t, at least he had given it a try. My mother got into having a garden a long time later when we were all grown, and they had moved into their own house. I remember in the middle of the garden stood her statue of St. Francis with a bird on his shoulder and his arm spread wide with his hands filled with seed. The garden was lovely, and we would sit by the kitchen windows and could see and smell the flowers. I think her small garden was the inspiration for my front garden. I’m just missing the St. Francis.
Last night I listened to the Sox on my way home. I caught the 7th inning which gave them the lead they kept. My father never listened to the game and seldom watched it. He was a hockey, football guy. I am a basketball-baseball sort though I do watch the Patriots. I just don’t understand everything, only the basics. My college was and still is a hockey school, and we went to all the home games. They were occasions to warm the innards with alcohol before we went. I think most occasions in college called for warming the innards. While the crowd stood and cheered, we sat and passed the wine skin sneaked in under a heavy winter coat. We were accurate at finding our mouths even under the worst conditions though a few misses were good for laughs. I still remember how cold the seats were and how cheap the wine was.
It’s a sit on the deck and read day. The air is comfortable, and there’s sun if I want it.

We have all kinds of weather here today. It started out cool and rainy, then it got hot and humid. Made me feel like I lived in a sauna 🙂 Now I can feel thunder closing in even if I haven´t heard anything yet. Every now and again streaks of cold air blows in to the hot and humid one.
I never mulch my flower beds or fertilize my lawn. I leave all dead plant bits in the flower beds, just cuts it down a bit and I hate grass 🙂 🙂 So the less fertilizer that falls on the grass the better 🙂 🙂
I´m not any kind of sport person to be honest, unless it´s a world championship, then I look at everything. I would like to say I was a curling person but they never show that on tv unless it´s the olympics.
Have a great day!
Christer.

Christer,
Another beautiful day. I’m getting spoiled. The breeze kept the day at just the right temperature. Our humidity is notorious but has been absent of late.
I kill the deadheads on all the flowers and throw them on the mulch. It’s that the mulch keeps the garden from needing constant weeding, and I like the look of the black mulch against the colors of the flowers.
I’ll watch baseball later.

It’s going to be another scorcher here in North Texas again today. One summer evening one of the local weather persons on TV gave the high temperature in Celsius because 40 sounds cooler than 105.
The Texas Rangers have to play nightly in their neo-classic ballpark in temperatures which by the seventh inning will cool to 95 degrees. Our former President, George W Bush, was the managing partner when they built the stadium and he was too cheep to build one with a retractable roof. Also, he is so conservative that he wanted the place to be a cross between, Ebbets Field, Tiger Stadium (the old one) and Camden Yards. Bush wanted us to return to the good old days before FDR. So, it has no character and looks just like every other new ball park. I hope they never replace Fenway or Wrigly Field with some modern replica. Day games here in North Texas between Memorial Day and Labor Day just are impossible to play or attend. Of course W’s buddies all have air conditioned suites from which to enjoy the games.
Unfortunately, all major sports today, including college sports, are really big “bidness” disguised as a game.

Bob,
It’s as bad as it was where I was in Ghana. My candles melted from the heat of the day, and there was no relief: no fan for me and no air conditioning anywhere near me.
I never did understand why that stadium had no roof given how hot it gets there. The Sox are used to August in Boston but playing the Rangers kills them.
Fenway has been improved and changed but not so you’d notice. The concourse was renovated, and it looks wonderful. I yearn to sit on the green monster!

Now you know the reason for no roof in Arlington. I only attended one game in Fenway in 1994 and loved the place including the Fenway franks. The concourse probably was just as it was in the 1950s when the Splendid Splinter, Ted Williams, was setting American League hitting records. Also, there were no seats on the green monster. Why would you want to watch a game from left field instead of behind the plate?

We sat and drank Boone’s Farm Apple Wine at Redskins games. Rot gut is what we called it. But it got us high, better than beer. Plus Boone’s was .79 a bottle back then. Beer a buck 50 in a paper cup. Both High Schools I went to were Basketball and Football freaks. Parents so imposing it made me stay away most games. So what are your plans for the 4th?

another boones farm admirer huh? Strawbeerhill I presume?
I also use to par-take in Ripple in my hippie days long ago.
Have a good 4th !

Z&Me,
I was never a beer drinker-still aren’t except for a couple of times in Ghana where the choice was beer or gin, both equally distasteful to me. We drank Chianti-loved those bottles for table candles.
The 4th will be with friends at their house for a cookout. It’s a yearly tradition.

The 4th of July is upon us again. In my young youth days, I was on summer vacation so it was just another day of excitment because there were fireworks. Then as I grew older and working, it was a break and holiday from work. As I am very closer to retirement now I just enjoy the 3 day’er and reflect on where this country started at, and where it is headed to.

morphy,
When I was young, it was an exciting day with the parade and the fireworks. A few times as an adult I did the fireworks as well, but now I’m just content to sit with friends and enjoy the day and the hot dohs and burgers!

Bob,
Those were voted the best seats in baseball, and I’d love to try them just once. I have sat behind home plate a few times, but the moster seats have more room, a place for your drinks, and it’s own food stands. Sounds like paradise to me.

It’s a lovely day in the neighborhood, and I am trying to try to take it easy, but oh so much to do! I seem to remember in college warming my innards and worse…shhhhhhh. My college, Franconia did some very odd sports– giggle. This fourth should be a quiet 4th, I hope and I have no idea if I am going out. Usually I like to stay at home with my cat, to make sure she is not freaked, but sometimes I think she babysits me. I hope this makes some sort of sense, because at this hour I am not at my finest. Thanks for all the music, Kat.

Lori,
Gracie is totally ignoring the fireworks going off right now in the neighborhood. She just sleeps through as do the two cats.
Not much to do here-laundry is about it. I did it all before my company came so I can take it easy now.
You are welcome for the music-it’s my pleasure.
Waving back!!
