“Millions long for immortality who don’t know what to do on a rainy afternoon.”

Yesterday afternoon and all last night it poured. I was surrounded by the sound of rain on the windows, on the roof and on the deck. It was such a wonderful sound it made me want to go outside and run up and down the street with my arms extended wide and a huge grin on my face, but sadly it’s still a little too chilly for my rain dance. That’s a summer activity. I did sit outside reading my book under the umbrella for a while. The drops over my head made the best music, but when it started raining really heavily, the umbrella was no longer a dry refuge and I came inside. Today is a leftover day: gray, still and damp.

I never even got dressed yesterday. This morning, though, is a different story. I was up early, not bright and early, just early, took my shower, made my bed and got dressed, all before coffee and the papers. I feel accomplished.

Morphy, a Coffee reader for a long time now, made a few different headers for Coffee when I switched to WordPress. The one I’ve been using is his as well. Lately I’ve wanted a new look for Coffee so I’m changing the header today and will alternate every week with another Morphy original, and I’d like your reactions. Whichever gets the most favorable reviews stays. I like them all.

The paint eating spawn of Satan did not return this summer. He had been a frequent visitor for two years. The sound of him gnawing on the deck furniture used to wake me up early in the morning, and I’d run down and scare him away. He gnawed the black paint down to the silver and left teeth marks you could see and feel on the metal parts of the arms of the chairs and the edge of the table. I figure whatever caused the need to eat the paint finally led to his demise.

This is that in-between time of year when it’s not quite summer, but summer is exactly what you crave. The nights are still chilly, down to the 50’s usually, and the days are unpredictable. Two days ago was perfect. It was the definition of summer, and we were out on the deck playing games and laughing. Dinner was the quintessential summer meal: hot dogs and salads, but we ate in the house. It had gotten too chilly. That’s is the yin yang of June on Cape Cod.

Your weather is very much like ours now. But itΒ΄s very windy here most of the time.
When I came home from work it was sunny and warm though but now itΒ΄s cold and grey again. Every now and again the rain falls.

Unfortunately my magpies comes back every year πŸ™‚ I do like them but the cost of cat food is sky high when they do their raids in to the kitchen and eats it all πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

This is a good looking header but I like the old one better, perhaps because IΒ΄m used to that πŸ™‚

    Have a great day!
    Christer.

      Christer,
It rained all day today, and the thunder shook the house. I’ve shut the doors and windows-the dampness is cold.

      I don’t think I’ve ever seen a magpie.

You are the first return it to the original vote!

I like both banners but would side with the womans face because it speaks to you as the writer of the blog. 8000 posts ago on my blog it was all about Zoey, the cat I rescued from a pig farm. But grew into something more of me and political. I decided to just leave things alone. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

      Z&Me,
I never thought of the old one that way, but I do like the idea!

My blog has had only a couple of changes over time. The original pictures were in color and were a variety of stuff, even cartoons. I don’t know how I got on to b&W.

Opinion noted! 2-0 for the old one

    Hi Kat,
This banner is also good and shows up very nicely on my Top Sites screen. πŸ™‚

The paint-eating spawn of Satan has probably gone to his reward, most likely due to excess paint in the blood. Or something large and predatory.
The little black one that lived in my bedroom for two days a couple of years ago is still in the area. He/she has a lovely little bird house in an oak tree up the dirt road. Sometimes he/she visits my yard and eats black walnut parts but never tries to visit the old home nest. Fine with me.
Raining here. Grey and cool. I’m going to pick up the dog from doggy day care, get something for dessert and spend the rest of the evening knitting with friends.

      Hi Caryn,
I’ll take that as a yes!

One of my friends suggested he might be stuck to a large magnet somewhere. I like the image. Once I watched him leaving the yard. He waddled more on the ground than he jumped from tree to tree.

Poured here this late afternoon. 5:30 looked more like 8 so I was wondering why my decorative lights hadn’t come on as they are set for 8. I’d not kept track of the time.

The puzzle pieces of my mind are not together yet. I do like your original header. This one wouldn’t win my vote. It’s lovely outside. Cool and sunny, and Meow is enjoying the weather outside, while her butler checks up on her every few minutes.
I want to thank you so much for your blog; it has brought such joy and music to my life. Cheers to you!

      Lori,
Okay, so far the old one wins.

      Rain, rain and more rain!

I am so glad that the blog has brought you joy!

I like this header. I am voting for this one over the old one.

Here in North Texas it has been summer for a long time. The high temperature during the cloudless afternoon is in the upper 90s, that’s in the upper 30s Celsius. For the last couple of nights we were in the path of some very heavy thunderstorms. We were awakened by our dogs who don’t like the loud thunder, lightning, high wind and rain. Luckily we missed out on the hail. We need the rain, but the parched ground absorbs it all by the afternoon.

The Dallas metropolitan area is in the Southwest end of tornado alley. In West Texas, where the big thunderstorms build in the afternoon heat, I have flown between thunderstorm cells while cruising at 47,000 ft. While passing them with a wide berth I was looking up at their tops. The tops of these thunderstorms can rise above 60,000 ft. and produce very violent winds, tornados, driving rain and large hail. These are the ones the storm chasers go after.

If the violent weather we have experienced this past spring is caused by man made global warming. I am reminded by the margarine TV commercial several years ago. This commercial had the mother nature character thinking the margarine she tasted is butter. The mother nature character exclaimed with a sound of thunder, “It’s not nice to fool mother nature”.

    • Kat's avatar Kat Says:

      Bob,
that’s 4-2 for the old one-another one coming in a couple of days.

I think we have gone beyond fooling with Mother Nature. We have changed her clothes, hair-do and her favorite alcoholic drink.

We had shake the house thunder today and pouring rain all night long. It’s been raining most of today was well. The hottest we’ve been is about 78Β°. The nights are close the window chilly. Summer is slow in coming.

I’m sorry it has arrived with such intensity for you. It meninds me of living in Ghana when it was over a 100 most days, and the rain was still months away.

I like the new header – it represents your blog title plus refers to the music you play. I vote – new

  7. Clare Stevens's avatar Clare Stevens Says:

Addendum to vote – I’d change the bricks to shingles like your house.

      Clare,
Morpfy created this, and I doubt I could figure out how to change anything. If he reappears, which he does every now and then, I’ll ask.

Okay…the mention of the rain made me think of this question – – and I hope you don’t think me some sort of nut. Please bear in mind I was NEVER good in the sciences.

If it rains really, really hard – – like it has the last couple days along the east coast – – we will oftentimes see the rain bounce UP from the pavement.

My question – – Has anybody figured out how many times a raindrop will bounce before it finally joins the river of water that will head toward the storm drain? I mean, somebody must’ve caught such stuff with a high-speed camera or something, right?

I think these things so you don’t have to. πŸ™‚

    • Kat's avatar Kat Says:

      Hi Coleen,
Okay, I think it’s a great question, and I’ve given it some thought. I’d guess a raindrop only bounces once before joining the cosmos of raindrops on their way to the drain.I figure the ground is so hard it stops the bouncing, like jumping on concrete-nothing to keep you springy. If a raindrop falls on water, though, it bounces a few more times. How do I know this you ask? `I’ve watched drops falling into puddles and they seem to bounce a few times before they disappear.

      • Coleen Burnett's avatar Coleen Burnett Says:

Thank you Kat. Leave it to me to come up with such things. I tend to agree with your theory. Hey you’re a teacher…they know everything there is to know. πŸ™‚

        All good wishes and a wave – – C.

Thanks, Colleen, for the vote of confidence!

A wave right back to you!
