I would be remiss if I didn’t add a bit here. Some radio stations refused to play this song because of the drug references, but not everyone got this meaning. The song was performed on the Lawrence Welk Show by a “wholesome” couple that had NO clue what a toke was. Welk, at the conclusion of the performance of the song, remarked, without any hint of humor, “there you’ve heard a modern spiritual by Gail and Dale.” The performance can be viewed here:

Hilarious!

Rowen,
It was so darn funny I had to watch four times.

This reminds me of the hilarity surrounding the 1992 Republican Convention.
Though touting the “family values” plank of the party’s platform, they chose as their theme song “The Best of Times is Now,” apparently unaware that it was from the gay-couple musical “La Cage Aux Folles.”

Jeff,
I had totally forgotten that-thanks for the reminder and the laugh.

I posted it to Facebook, giving your great blog the credit; I hope you don’t mind!
And I will look up the Best of Times is Now.. thanks! After finally finishing my taxes, from 2009, ( I will get a refund) and the Warm Pool fiasco, I needed a good laugh.

Lori,
I would never mind you giving my blog a plug! I thought that video totally hysterical. When no one saw it all day, I was just so disappointed that it would be missed. I’m so glad you saw it, and I’m happy Jeff gave you a laugh!

Thanks Jeff for that bit of info. I had to giggle and I did post it on Facebook.
I am an addicted Facebook user.

A bunch of us got on stage with B & S at a festival at UMass in Springfield. Fun times.

Cuidado,
Those were the moist uninhibited days of my life. I would have been right with you.

I can’t possibly understand that Welk & the Barby twins never knew what it was all about. I mean what the hell did they think “toke” was??
Pete
Shaking head in disbelief

Pete,
I gave that some thought and figured no one was willing to risk explaining toke in case Mr.Welk wondered how and why they knew.

One of those guys went to my high school in Oklahoma City about 10 years before I do; can’t recall now which one. Always liked ’em.

Greg,
I never watched the program as my parents weren’t fans. The only one I remember is Bobby Burgess because he used to be a Mouskeeter.

Clueless. They were totally clueless — which makes it even funnier. I agree that someone working on the show must have known, but I think their reason for not spilling the beans was so they could goof on it — just as we are today. Wonder if anyone on the show ever sang “Mellow Yellow?”

im6,
I would have snickered all the way through the song if I were watching those two. The Welk line would have sent me into convulsions of laughter.
I think Donovan gave that one away.

I lived in Kansas City when they were there and saw them perform any number of times. Very good memories!! They always gave a good and fun concert.

Sara,
Just from the one album I had, I would have thought that about their concerts.
