Alas,I remember when this song came out, or I should say the album. It was a moment of Love with my new bride, but 10 years later a divorced memory. Oh Well.
I always loved Carol King. Yes, I did see her do a free concert in Central Park when I was in high school. I had to leave the concert early as it was on a Jewish holiday which started at sunset, and my mom was adamant that I hop on the bus and return so that I could attend the family occasion. I wailed and cried to no avail and even tried calling at the last moment with a rather poor excuse of why I might be late. Needless to say, it didn’t work. It was a great concert and she is a terrific performer.
Lori,
Of course you saw her. I can’t imagine you missed anyone! Sorry you couldn’t stay, but family came first! I was going to see her and James Taylor but had something previously planned so I couldn’t.
Carole King wrote this with Toni Stern, a free-spirited painter and lyricist from Los Angeles who complemented King very well. Said Stern: “I’m sure there was a California quality in me that appealed to Carole. She was moving from a familial, middle class lifestyle to Laurel Canyon, where she started to let her hair down, literally and figuratively. We worked off our contrasts.”
Stern would usually agonize over lyrics, but she wrote these very quickly. Stern also worked with King on the Tapestry track “Where You Lead.”
