Edith Piaf actually sang many iterations of this song (not this particular song, but ones like it) before she became an international phenom. Her songs weren’t about laundry girls, but waitresses and streetwalkers. The dream of an ideal lover one day entering the scene is what kept them going each day.

This song is from The Lullaby of Broadway, The Best of Busby Berkeley. It was in the movie Dames, released in 1934.
I have only later Edith Piaf songs, none from the time you mention. I’ll have to look them up and see what I can find.
