Odo Anigyina: E.T. Mensah
This is from an album called E.T. Mensah Day by Day, Classic Highlife Recordings of the 1950’s and 1960’s. When I was in Ghana, I loved watching couples dance to highlife music. In what was a ballroom dance, they had this wonderful rhythm.
Highlife emerged in the 20’s and is considered a major influence on all subsequent African Music. I can still remember sitting in a spot, an outside bar, listening and watching.

I’m callin’ for MORE, when you see an opportunity. This is great. The rhythm is really infectious.

Rick,
I’ll be glad to post more and probably will as I start to finalize my trip. If you’d like, I could e-mail you some downloads.

It was watching a crowd of people doing the elegant highlife at the Hotel de Kingsway in Kumasi that sealed the deal and made me ask to be posted there. I felt I was in the cultural heart of the country.
Another subject: does the gist of today’s post (public latrines in Africa) mean you watched that great video I sent you made by current PCVs?

Ralph,
Kumasi was the way station for me on the way to and from Bolga to Accra, but I also saw the elegant highlife in Bolga at the Hotel d’Bull.
Yup, I loved that video!!
