“Every spring is the only spring – a perpetual astonishment.”
The sky is white gray, and it’s cold outside. The paper said snow this evening and tomorrow, not much accumulation, but the mere thought of any bit of snow in late March is just beyond the pale. My father always said snow this time of year is poor man’s fertilizer, and that is about as optimistic as I can be with the weather prediction.
My back is hurting so today is a lazy day. My only chores are paying a few bills, watering the plants and refilling the feeders. I miss seeing my birds.
March always seemed the longest month to me even when I was a kid, and it feels the same to me still. We had only one day off from school, St. Patrick’s day, and no special events broke up the rest of the month. Most times the weather kept us inside after school, and I’d spend the time reading or we’d play games at the kitchen table until dinner. Only the Saturday matinee and church on Sunday broke up the week.
April has a magic about it. The air smells sweet, and the grass is a brighter green and soft to the touch. The garden is finally awake, flowers are blooming and the sun seems to shine every day. All of a sudden we too are bright with color. Pastels take over from the winter grays and dark blues and our ears feel the breeze and our hands stay warm even without gloves. Only at night does it feel chilly again, but by then we are warm and cozy inside the house tired from a day of school and from playing all afternoon.
I’m counting the days until April and eagerly awaiting that first warm day when I can sit on the deck, smell the sweetness of the air and close my eyes to listen to the sounds of spring.

The turkey vultures are back from Florida.
The skunk cabbage is in bloom.
The Cadbury Mini Eggs are in the store.
Spring is here!
April is the ripe, sweet cherry on top of all this.

Hi Caryn,
Yesterday I was far more optimistic. Today there is snow on the ground, and it will be cold the rest of the week. Spring, please come quickly!

Grey and windy most of the day here but it´s still rather warm though.
February was always the longest month for me and perhaps still is. March has the light and the hope of an early spring, february only have the coldness and darkness and nothing to hope for 🙂 April and May are the best months of the year 🙂
My back aces and to be honest most of my body too. It´s little Novas fault and for the moment she is happy I don´t take her to the vet to end her life 🙂 🙂 🙂 But I´ll write more about that in tomorrows bolg over at my place.
Have a great day now!
Christer.

My back aches nothing else and I don´t have a bolg, but a blog 🙂 🙂 I blame this on Nova too 🙂

Christer,
Gracie jumped the fence so many times when she was a puppy I was discouraged and angry. She doesn’t jump it now, but she still jumps on my company. I live with it as she just ignores me.

Christer,
No warmth here. Even Miss Gracie was out for only a short time this morning. My birds have emptied the feeders so I’ll have to rough it and go out into the cold and the snow.
Nova is still such a puppy. She’ll figure it out!

We all do love Spring. When we lived in DC we would set aside a Saturday to walk the circle at the Jefferson Memorial where an abundance of Cherry Blossoms were in bloom. The fragrance was probably closer to LSD. It really was overwhelming, but we loved it and the temps were always in the 60 to 70 range. I really miss Washington, D.C.; Old Towne Alexandria; Dulles Airport where we used to race our cars; and Mount Vernon, both Washingtons Estate and the Parkway. All unique places to hang out and have a fun weekend. I Love Georgetown too and would stop every Friday after work for drinks with friends at Mr Smith’s. It’s still there, all but the friends, two died, two left town for retirement, and one is retired in the same house he lived in when he started lawyering for the IRS. Amazing. He will never change. I think we bury him in the basement in that old house in Olney, Maryland. Good memories today Kat!! Thanks.

Z&Me,
I think the smells of spring ignite all the best memories. I lived close to Boston when I was a kid but it seemed miles and miles away as my town as so much to keep us busy. Many of the kids I grew up with still live there. I guess they too are drawn by all those wonderful memories.

My Dear Hedley,
If my thoughts and well wishes had power, you’d be up and about!
