“When gardeners garden, it is not just plants that grow, but the gardeners themselves.”

The weather is amazing today. Even though the sun is in and out, it is still in the high 40’s and will even reach the 50’s, almost spring weather. I have a few errands after this, and I can’t wait to open the windows to smell the fresh air.

Yesterday I saw my surgeon who figured out why my right leg still hurts. It seems that whatever he put between the screws has moved and is lying on a nerve and that is causing all the pain. The only solution is to fix it through surgery. He also figured he’d add screws to the corresponding bone on the other side. They then should reinforce each other. I knew he didn’t use Gorilla Glue.

My garden shoots are even higher. I keep a daily watch. None of the garden centers are open yet, but that will come soon enough. This year I’m adding a small vegetable garden in the back yard. I’ll start some in the house and then transplant them. No zucchini! It is like a monster from outer space which can replicate itself to take over the planet.

I don’t remember squash when I was a kid. I think my mother decided not to try it on us as she had enough trouble getting us to eat carrots. She used to mix them with the mashed potatoes. We never asked. We just thought mashed potatoes were multicolored. I always like peas so they were served even though my brother hated them. I don’t remember any other vegetables served when we were young. I guess my mother picked her battles.

I’m always proud when stuff grows in my garden because I’m not a gardener. I buy flowers by color, and every year the perennials come right back all on their own without any help from me. My herb garden flourishes, and I love snipping what I need to make a dish using herbs from my own garden. I have high hopes for the vegetable garden. I’m way past mixing my carrots and potatoes.

The wind is driving me crazy over here, it hits the cottage on the only side that isnΒ΄t protected by trees or my neighbors house. It feels like nothing can stop the cold from taking over my home (even though it is rather warm inside).

So a new surgery is on its way then! Not fun but if it helps thereΒ΄s no alternative. But I guess this one will be easier to recover from.

We had one more vegetable in my family, cauliflower! I hate it and have always done πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ The day my mother understood that broccoli was a much better vegetable I cheered inside πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

I will make my patio to a greenhouse this year and finally I will get more than only one ripe tomato πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ But IΒ΄ll also make a vegetable garden so I can get some potatoes too πŸ™‚

    Have a great day now!
    Christer.

      Christer,
Wind makes everything colder this time of year. It just whips right through clothing.

He’s fixing the first then doing a second incision on the other side. I do hope I heal faster.
I am not a lover of cauliflower though I’d eat a bit cold with a dip. I only like broccoli uncooked also.

I love the tomatoes from my own garden.

More surgery . . . hope he gets it right this time. My garden or most of it, survived the low temps we got this year so I should have Tomatos by June. The plants look a beautiful green and already buds showing. So I am hoping no more freeeze but who can tell anymore these days? Gardens are fun. Hope you enjoys your as much as I do caring for the few plants I have out there. My herbs don’t look real healthy but someone told me they will come back like a monster when the temps hit 80. I’m hoping. Good luck with that leg surgery.!!

      Z&Me,
He said it was an oddity he hadn’t ever seen before. Leave it to me! Tomatoes here are August veggies, and I can’t wait until they arrive. Last year I had the best herb garden I’ve ever had.

I am looking forward to my vegetable garden!

    Hi Kat,
My mother cooked all vegetables until they were mush. Potatoes and winter squash could take that abuse but the green veggies just couldn’t. Even so, we were expected to eat them and usually we did. We weren’t buying the spinach thing though. That was mush too far. I don’t care what Popeye said.
I have no green things growing here yet but the tide of snow is receding from the edges of the lawn and I can see brown muddy grass.
Hope the second surgery corrects all issues.

      Hi Caryn,
As we got older, my mother introduced more vegetables. Corn on the cob was a favorite and so were a few of the quashes. Spinach never made it in my house either.

We have only a trace of snow. My lawn is still brown and will be for a while then it gets that lushness only spring can bring.

I can’t believe I have to have a second surgery.

So, … the surgeon made a few cutting remarks?

      splendid,
I’ll plant the usual herb garden with rosemary, oregano, parsley, sage, basil, thyme and whatever else looks good. I’ll plant the small tomatoes in deck boxes, and I have no idea yet what vegetables.

Sorry to hear that you will need more surgery. Modern medicine can do wonders. However, it’s the only profession where they get to bury their mistakes. It’s a science when you live and an art when you die. Of course your doctor is the best in his specialty in the world.

I basically have a black thumb. I am not African American, but I can kill a plant faster than a speeding bullet. My grandfather had a green thumb. He could cut some branches from a bush, plant them in the ground and in a few weeks a new bush would grow from the cuttings. On the other hand, I kill the grass when I try to mow it, and I have killed many house plants and bushes over the years. The only growing thing I can’t kill are weeds. Many of my fellow citizens want to deport all the illegals who cross our borders. I agree that they should not be here. Just don’t deport the ones who mow and tend my yard. I don’t think I can find anyone who was born here that wants to do yard work. What kind of impression will Astroturf make on my neighbors.

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

      Bob,
Thanks-it’s not making me too happy either. I saw the x-ray after surgery and everything looked great. In the one from the other day it was easy to see that the piece between the bones had drifted.

I have friends with black thumbs who tend to kill anything they touch as well. I seem to have a green thumb, and I’m not a lover of gardening. Things just grow for me.

I think Astroturf might just be the ticket. I remember some years ago when California had the worst drought and no one was allowed to water lawns. Some people just painted the ground green.

Unfortunately, in Texas our soil is almost all clay. Since clay expands and contracts with the amount of moisture in the ground I have to water the grass around my slab foundation or else the foundation will crack and my doors and windows will not close. In the middle of the summer my water bill and my electric bill are about the same. The cost of repairing the foundation is a big chunk of cash. If I want to sell the house the new owners can’t get financing with a cracked foundation. Pay now or pay later.

Sounds to me like your Surgeon just told you – you have a (few) screw(s) loose?!?

We could’ve told you this much. πŸ™‚

    Bob,
Our soil is sandy and I am amazed when things grow as well as they do.
