I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape – the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show.
It is later than I hoped, but I had to make the same trip twice but in reverse. After I left the dentist, I went and bought some biscotti and a lemon loaf cake then went to another store for Gracie food. While I was there, my spankin’ new temporary crown came loose. Home I went and called the dentist who was unavailable for fifteen minutes so I decided to have coffee and an anise biscotti. When I looked in the bag from the bakery, my lemon cake wasn’t there. The dentist called and said, “Come right over,” and I did, sort of, as I stopped and got my lemon cake. My temporary crown doesn’t move a bit. I didn’t ask what they used. I was imagining Gorilla glue.
I was driving a lot today, and I loved my ride. On the way home, the second time, I took the highway and all around me was the beauty even a winter’s day can have. I was completely surprised. My view of winter has been a small one, out the window here by the desk. On the highway it was a vista. I could see far in front of me. The sky was bright with all sorts of different grays. A snow shower with its tiny flakes was spun by the wind. The bare branches on the trees along the side of the road were silhouettes. I was driving slowly, unusual for me, as I wanted the scene to stay with me as long as possible. I still don’t like winter, and I’ve had enough snow, but today gave me a whole new appreciation of winter. In its starkness there is a beauty. Maybe that will help hold me until spring, but then again, so will the flowers I bought the other day.

Ouch! I think we are falling apart. I just got out of the hospital, Nutrafils down to 700. While there I watched 15 western movies because it was western week somewhere. Open Range was a favorite; the old Tombstone movie I’ve seen 10 times; but all in all I have missed more than half shown. Shows what a movie goer I was in the late 90’s. No word about your leg? Getting better I hope. My plastic replacement crown was put on in sept and still holding so yay for Gorilla Glue. I’m sure it’s something different.

Z&Me,
I doubt I would have lasted with it being western week. That would have been painful.
The leg hardly hurts at all during the day, but it flares most nights, usually around 4 or 5. The other night was tough. I figure it’s because I do things or carry things. I need a porter to carry everything.
Two weeks before the real crown comes in.

Rick replies:
Vistas of blowing snow and slippery ice will endure long after lovely bouquets of flowers turn dark, then brown and shatter on the floor.
But, when warm sea breezes come to play and move your hair (ever so gently) and the smell of natural flowers growing in your own beds and your neighbors’ yards overwhelms you like a bumbling bee, carrying pollen home so slowly and drunken with nectar, you will feel the drums heralding summer’s arrival begin to beat in time with your heart.

Rick,
I am always the eternal optimist, even in the depths of winter.
You now have me longing for summer filled as it is with the array of garden flowers in all colors and a sweetness in the air.

Yes winter days can be incredible beautiful, but I wish I only had to see in on cards and tv 🙂 🙂 It snows like crazy here this morning and that would normally make me a bit depressed, but it will all melt away already early today so I don´t mind right now 🙂
I´m home from work today because the time I got foe the annual vehicle inspection made it sort of stupid going to work either before or after it is done. We work less hours on fridays You see. So now I have a fire in the stove and I´m just about to make a pot of tea and have some breakfast.
With the snow came the wind and I can hear how it blows hard outside. It´s quite nice to stay indoors at the moment 🙂 🙂
Have a great day now!
Christer.

Christer,
Your Friday’s sound wonderful. Nothing like a warm fire and a pot of tea. I hope you’ll be having some of that bread you made.
The snow finally just petered away yesterday.

In the past few years I’ve begun to notice how beautiful weeping willow trees look on a bright, sunny, snow filled day. And, two nights ago, during the blizzard, the blowing snow, coming from all directions at once, reminded me strangely of a cotton candy machine. Yes, winter can be beautiful.
Glad to hear you got the temp re-cemented. Someday I’ll tell you about a crown I had that came loose and was swallowed during a breakfast mouthful of Cheerios. It’s amazing what a man will find himself doing to save $700ºº.

I really hope You didn´t do what I think You did 🙂 🙂 🙂

Not much choice there, Christer

John,
The thing doesn’t even move a whit now. It is temporary so had I eaten it with dinner, my dentist would have fashioned another. The real crown won’t be in for two weeks. I’d be saving well over a $1000 and I would too!

You jinxed me Kat,
I just lost another filling!

Always looking for the very first sign of spring,I almost always find that I missed it after all.
Suddenly some leaves are already there and then the race is on. I can only breathlessly run after the developments. Spring jumps on me and explodes faster than I can follow. We think it’s still winter, but I know bugger Spring is ready to once again surprise me.

Bert,
When I see the tips of my daffodils even through the snow, I know spring is getting close.
Every year my friends and I go to the beach to welcome sunrise on the first day of spring then we go out to breakfast. It’s like a holiday!

splendid,
I wish we had more than just the pine and the oak. Fir trees survive but the ocean air is not amenable to a variety of trees.
I too love the way snow lies on the branches. That is when the snowy world is the prettiest.

Oh wow. Going to the beach sounds wonderful…what a great way to open the new season!
Darn it, Kat…now you have me thinking about the same thing. I mean, seeing as how I’m a mere block from the ocean… 🙂
The best part is when I stand in my parking lot and can HEAR the waves as they are carried by the wind…AWESOME!!
Have a great day…

Hi Coleen,
I’ll tell you though it is mighty cold on the beach before and after the sun rises. We layer and also bring chairs so we can sit and chat until the first glimpses of the sun. Last year I got the best pictures as the sun rose, “…a ribbon at a time.”
On the way home we saw wild turkeys on our street and on the way to breakfast we saw a fox. It was the best day.

John,
It must be the season!

Hopefully my dentist is back from her maternity leave. I’d hate to have her partner do the work. But, since there’s no pain (save for the pain caused by constantly running my tongue over the sharp edges) I can wait a while if I have to.
February 6, 2011 at 2:57 pm
John,
It is so silly that we keep moving our tongues over that spot. Luckily mine wasn’t sharp or my tongue would be shredded.
