“February is merely as long as is needed to pass the time until March.”

I woke up this morning at 8 with the intention of going back to bed after a bathroom trip then I looked outside. It was snowing. I remembered I hadn’t filled the feeders so I put on shoes and a sweatshirt, filled a bag with sunflower seeds and went outside. After filling two of the feeders my hands were really cold so I kept putting one in the sweatshirt pouch then switching hands. I can’t wear mittens and do the feeders so I have to bear it and move fast.

I’m been back inside a while. I have a cup of coffee and I’m warm. Five feeders are now ready for the birds. A squirrel amused me this earlier. He was trying to get at the suet which is in a squirrel proof feeder. He moved all around it, reaching and trying to grab the suet. He next tried to chew the wire holding the feeder to the hook. That idea didn’t last long. He went round and round a few more times then gave up and jumped to a branch. I applauded.

When I was working, snow days were the most fun. They were a surprise and a gift. Today feels like that. After the bird feeders, my morning was leisurely. I brewed coffee and read the two newspapers. I turned on the TV which I never do so here I am watching CSI solve yet another murder. Lunch will be crackers with a three pepper dip. I’ll take a nap later. The light is on in here, and I see shadows on the walls. In the living room, the window lights and a lit gourd barely lightΒ  the room but it’s just enough to give the room a cozy air. I keep looking out the window and watching the snow. It has gone from small flakes to large flakes and now sleet seems to be mixed with the snow. The birds are huddled somewhere warm. The feeders will wait.

Rain here this morning and the roads were slippery once again. I almost drove down in to a cow pasture just a couple of hundred yards from home πŸ™‚ But if I had it would have been close to home anyway πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ The bigger roads were ok though.

There is a lack of sunflower seeds here in Sweden now, so many companies have stopped selling it as bird food. With a bit of unluck I might not get any more this winter. I hope the birds can settle for something else for the rest of the time.

Wolves has been seen only less that two miles from my home, so I cross my fingers that IΒ΄ll get a chance to see them before they move on πŸ™‚

    Have a great day now!
    Christer.

It wasn’t THAT long ago that the near presence of wolves was viewed with HORROR, not wonder.

        Rick,
I think that urbanization has made them creatures of wonder as very few people see them in the wild. I am amazed when I see coyotes around here, and it is pretty common. Lately wild turkeys have gotten to be a common sight. I always reach for the camera.

It depends on who You ask πŸ™‚ Many are still really afraid of them here, but I would love to see them πŸ™‚

    Hi Kat,
I have robins! I know they hang around all winter but they don’t hang around in my yard until much later in the winter.
I saw a turkey vulture last week. It was making heavy weather southbound on I-93.
I’m waiting for the Cadbury Mini Eggs to show up. Then I will know that Spring is not far behind.
    Enough snow already.

      Hi Caryn,
I remember seeing my first robin in the dead of winter then someone burst my hope for an early spring bubble by saying there are winter robins. I haven’t seen one since. Isn’t it the neatest thing-I find the sight of a robin hopeful. Can spring be far behind?

It’s only February and that whacks me in the face sometimes when I get to thinking spring.

The seed catalogs should start coming-that’s another sign.

As you know, Connecticut has had plenty of snow recently and we keep piling it up while waiting for some warmth. The squirrels are at our feeders also, but with the blanket of snow, they can’t get to their nut supply, so I’m trying to be a little patient. In our front yard, a squirrel was sitting on the baffle which was well supported by snow, just getting a share of the sunflower seeds. Bad news about the seeds in Sweden. Hope we don’t follow suit. Stay warm.

      Bob,
I did leave a bunch of seeds for the squirrel on the rail and the deck. He did find the ones on the rail and with all of the rain today, he’ll find the ones on the deck. I have a corn feeder for squirrels which they use but they prefer the sunflower seeds.

      You stay warm too!!
