“Why? Why, why, why do I do this???”

Today has not had some of my finest hours. We got maybe 3″ or 4″ of snow. Because it was so little, my plowman didn’t come. I figured I could use my broom the same as I did last time. Twice I have been locked out of the house because the storm door wouldn’t open. It was stuck at the latch. My neighbor was good enough each time to jump the back fence and let me in. Ever since then I’ve shut the front door and left the storm door slightly opened, and it has worked well until today. I forgot to check my front door-it was locked, and I was stuck outside yet again. My neighbor wasn’t home so I had to figure a way inside the back door. There is no gate to the yard which I am now regretting. My deck man said he’d make one in the spring but that is small consolation. I have lattice on the rail of the back stairs. I managed to get one piece off then I tried to climb onto the deck. Mind you, my leg is aching from the dump run and from sweeping so it wasn’t cooperative. I managed to get my good leg on the deck near the rail but I just couldn’t lift my bad leg up far enough so I could go over the rail. I tried four or five different configurations and none worked. Finally I went to another neighbor to borrow a step ladder. She sent her husband with the ladder as she said I wasn’t climbing. We opened the step ladder, but he couldn’t quite get his leg over the rail as the ladder was too short. I helped and over went his leg then I helped and over went the other leg. He let me in. At least it was a different neighbor this time.

We have sun and blue skies today. I’ll take like as a consolation for the morning.

I´m so sorry but I just can´t stop laughing 🙂 🙂 In my mind I can see You both by the ladder and how You help him get his legs over 🙂 🙂

Thank good my doors can´t lock themselves unless I do it with the key, but still Your adventures have made me having both doors unlocked when I step out for a second or two!

I hope You don´t have to pay with pain for trying to get in today!
    Take care my friend!
    Christer.

    Christer,
Laugh away-the story even sounds funny to me now sitting here safe and warm. I don’t know how many times I trudged back and forth. It’s true I had to push his leg over-my neighbor is in his seventies.

Oh, Kat. Your doors do like to torment you, don’t they.
I locked myself out of my house once after I got the new porch door. I was both relieved and disturbed to discover how easy it was to open the porch window screen and unlock the door from the inside. All it needed was a small pointy thing like a nail or a screw and I was in like Flynn.
Here’s hoping there is not hell to pay for your exertions.

      Hi Caryn,
I hadn’t checked the front door to see if it was unlocked. That was damn silly. It has always been the storm door which causes the problems so I was shocked I had forgotten the front door.

I hate to admit it but I got caught locked out again later. My plowman had come, and I told him the door was open so he could get the stuff to sprinkle and his check. He must have noticed the storm door was ajar and closed it. He locked me out/.

Keystone Cops, well at least you got in. I had a neighbor who was stranded and when we tried the side garage door we found kid robbers carrying out her TV. All hell broke loose. They had broken a storm door on the back and let themselves in but not to our knowledge. And one of the kids was an A+ Honor Student known to everyone in the neighborhood. You need to find a way to key something to a remote. Keep that in your pocket while sweeping or getting the newsy paper. Good luck!

      Z&Me,
I’d like to think that Gracie would be keeping the bandits at bay.

No key would solve the problem as it is the storm door is the trouble and it has no key. The door gets stuck on the piece connected to the door jam which holds the door closed. For some reason it just doesn’t give from the outside.

Suffering from TOO MUCH security. Now THERE is a situation most folks do not have. Good luck with the leg.

      Thanks, Rick

When I was stuck sleeping on the couch because of the sciatica, the back door was open so the dog could go in and out and my front door was unlocked. A gang of thieves could have come, and I wouldn’t have been able to do a thing. Gracie was my only hope.

I guess I’m a horrible person too. I laughed out loud reading of the splayed ladders and legs.
I’ve got a coded garage door opener control mounted on the outside wall of the garage. It’s coded for the last 4 digits of my phone number so not only will I remember it but all I have to do for friends/neighbors to gain access is to remind them to use those #’s.
Then, I’ve got a door key on a rack on the tool wall of the garage. You’d never find it if you were looking for it and even if you did find it, the tag has a phony label to discourage any unwanted users. I’ve been locked out a couple of times and got back in in a matter of minutes.
Also, three of us families all have duplicates of each other’s door keys. It’s so nice to have neighbors one can trust.

It’s about $40ºº for the control – and worth every penny!
    The neighbors are priceless!

      John,
The front door is not the problem; it’s the storm door which won’t open. The piece connected to the door jamb won’t move no matter how much you try. Leaving keys all over wouldn’t help. I think I need to leave step ladders all over.

My neighbors also have a key to the front door just in case the real front door locks me out. I hate my storm door today.

Socializing must be possible in a simpler way. This is not an efficient approach.

    • katry's avatar katry Says:

No, Bert, it certainly isn’t.At last count, it has been 4 neighbors who have gotten me back inside my house. Last summer the back screen door decided to lock all on its own. There I was yelling, “Hello? Hello?” when my neighbor showed up roaring with laughter at my predicament.
