ok everyone. It was written by Michel Legrand and Alan Bergman for the soundtrack of “Thomas Crown Affair” and was sung by Noel Harrison, who is the son of the actor Rex Harrison. It won an Academy Award in 1969 for best song and was sung on the Awards by Jose Feliciano because Harrison’s record company would not allow him to sing it on the broadcast
The opening slide down the chromatic scale is based on the opening movement of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola.
and just a piece of trivia – (Harrison’s father, the British actor Rex Harrison, had performed the previous year’s Oscar-winning song “Talk to the Animals”)
sblake,
This one too has an African connection. In July of 1971 I ws in Accra getting ready to close my Peace Corps service. A bunch of friends were there for the same reason so we went out together every night. The Thomas Crown Affair was at one of the theaters and we went to see it. I didn’t remember the song, but I sure as heck recognized the scenery as it was shot in and around Boston. I was going home and there it was, a preview.
Thank you, thank you for posting this. I had forgotten the name Noel Harrison. My favourite song of his was “The young girl”, which I just now listened to for the first time in 40 years.

I’ve alway liked this song. To Kill A Mockingbird is still one of my favorite books, and they made an excellent movie. Thanks Kat.
