Composer Howard Blake revealed on the Classic FM radio station that the inspiration for this song came when he was walking along a Cornish beach. The phrase “walking in the air” came into his head and as soon as he got home he penned this tune around those words.
This featured in the 1982 animated film The Snowman, which was based on the Raymond Briggs book of the same name. In the movie, which has become a perennial Christmas favorite on British television, English choirboy Peter Autey sings this song. However Welsh choirboy Aled Jones recorded the vocals on its subsequent single release.
